The magic of secularization
Institutional secularization does not necessitate a secular public. In fact, as church memberships decline, more individualized sources of supernatural belief can emerge. Using a nationally representative survey of American adults (n = 1812), we analyze the popularity of “secular rationalism” and how it relates to belief in non-Divine supernatural causation, i.e., magic. Our findings suggest that belief in magic is not simply the inverse of relig…
Environmental penalties and stock price crash risk: The moderating role of hard environmental information on positive items
Investigating how to reduce stock price crash risk (SPCR) holds great significance. However, previous studies have failed to investigate the heterogeneous effects of various forms of environmental information on SPCR. To address this gap, we categorize environmental information into soft and hard types, focusing specifically on hard environmental information, which we further divide into negative and positive items. We investigate (i) whether env…
Can penalties for environmental violations deter firms from engaging in greenwashing
Preventing firms from engaging in greenwashing is a topic of significant theoretical and practical interest. This study examines the impact of penalties for environmental violations (PEVs) on mitigating greenwashing using a dataset of firms listed on China's A‐share market operating in heavily polluting industries from 2014 to 2020. We also examine how firm‐level characteristics moderate the relationship between PEVs and greenwashing. Our results…
For the Power or the Glory? The Religiosity of America’s Religious Nationalists
State-centered Christian statism (CS) and society-centered religious traditionalism (RT) are two conservative religious nationalist ideologies that share Christian symbolisms but contain different attitudes about how the state and religion should interact; specifically, CS reflects the belief that Christianity needs to be the guiding ideology of the federal government, and RT mainly promotes the Christian ethos within civil society. We investigat…
Fathers’ overprotective parenting and young children’s problem behaviors: Mediating by mothers’ overprotective attitudes and parenting stress
This study examined the relationship between paternal overprotective parenting and problem behaviors of preschool children, and maternal overprotective attitudes and parenting stress mediation of that relationship. Data were collected from 265 families, including parents and preschool children (ages 3–6). The results revealed that paternal overprotective attitudes significantly influenced maternal overprotective attitudes and maternal parenting s…
The sacred gun: The religious and magical elements of America's gun culture
Gun culture is properly measured by a population's emotional and symbolic attachment to guns and not by rates of gun ownership. Using data from the Baylor Religion Survey (wave 6), we find that nearly all gun owners feel that guns provide them with a physical sense of security (Gun Security), but a distinct and crucial sub-set of owners express an additional and strong attachment to their weapons (Gun Sanctity). Gun Sanctity measures the extent t…

Father’s parenting attitude and teacher-child relationships: Mediating role of children’s self-regulation ability
We examined father’s parenting attitudes in association with teacher-child relationships and the mediating role of young children’s self-regulation ability in this relationship. Participant fathers (n = 211), age range (below 30 to over 41 years of age) and teachers (n = 7), years of teaching experience (3 to 12 years) completed surveys of father-child pairs for 211 primary school children, with the teachers completing the children’s self-regulat…
Father influences on child social adaptability: Mediation by peer communication ability

Father–child relationship and children’s peer competence: Mediated by children’s emotional regulation and environmental adaptation
This study aimed to explore father–child relationships and young children's peer competence, as mediated by child emotional regulation and environmental adaptation. The children's fathers and teachers completed peer competence, child emotional regulation and environmental adaptation measures on 216 Chinese children and their fathers. The results, following correlation analysis by SPSS 25.0 and validation analysis by AMOS modelling, demonstrated t…
The Duality of American Christian Nationalism: Religious Traditionalism versus Christian Statism
While posited as a unified ideology, Christian Nationalism (CN) actually contains two distinct views of what it means to be a 'Christian Nation'-one which envisions a Christian civil society separate from the profanities of politics, what we call 'Religious Traditionalism.' The other envisions a Christian federal government where power is wielded exclusively by ethno-religious insiders, or 'Christian Statism.' Multiple waves of two national surve…
Psychological empowerment and professional well-being of Chinese kindergarten teachers: The mediating effect of professional pressure

The teachers completed self-report measures of psychological empowerment, professional well-being, and professional pressure. The …
The impact of penalties for environmental violations on corporate environmental responsibility
Identifying firms' responses to the imposition of penalties for environmental violations in the context of corporate environmental responsibility (CER) is important to understand the impact of environmental penalties (EPs) and improve their design. Using a research sample consisting of Chinese listed firms in heavy polluting sectors from 2014 to 2020, we investigate whether and how penalties for environmental violations can affect subsequent CER …
Extending the Technology Acceptance Model to Explore Students' Intention to Use an Online Education Platform at a University in China
While online education has been increasingly adopted in different educational systems across the world, it is still a recent phenomenon in developing countries such as China. Various factors could affect learners' adoption of technology, including their online learning. In this study, we took the Technology Acceptance Model as the theoretical framework and extended the Model by including extra external variables and one perceived variable to expl…
Influence of ego resilience on school adaptability among primary school lower-grade children
We explored the association between primary school children’s ego resilience, failure tolerance, and adaptability in a Chinese school setting. The participants were 231 primary school children (female = 45.9%; from two-parent families = 81%, from single parent families = 19%; first grade = 35.1%, second grade = 30.3%, third grade = 34.6%). Class teachers completed surveys on the children’s ego resilience, failure tolerance, and school adaptabilit…
Opening the Black Box: The Impacts of Environmental Regulations on Technological Innovation
Environmental regulations (ERs) that can stimulate technological innovation (TI) are the key to enabling a win-win strategy that benefits both economic development and environmental protection. This study seeks to analyze the impacts of ERs on TI. Previous literature highlighted that the black box of TI can be decomposed into technology investment and technology transformation, but empirical studies on such a decomposition have largely been ignor…
