From Affirmative Action to Diversity: Critical Reflections on Graduate Education in Sociology
This article explores the contradictory results of the shift from a race‐conscious affirmative action discourse to a broader “diversity embrace” that advocates tolerance, equality, and respect for cultural differences on university campuses. Drawing on critical race theory and research on the practice of affirmative action in organizations, we argue that the diversity embrace subsumes recognition of racialized histories, social relations, and pra…

1992), coedited by Doris Wilkinson, Maxine Baca Zinn, and Esther Ngan Ling Chow; and Sexual Identities/Sexual Communities (September 1994), edited by Beth E. Schneider. Each of these called attention to critical theo retical and empirical topics that marked the time. Although Marxist-feminist theory is less visible now, eclipsed by developments in queer theory, inter sectional theory, and other contemporary perspectives, this issue remains an imp…

John H. Gagnon and William Simon's Sexual Conduct: The Social Sources of Human Sexuality
John Gagnon and William Simon's Sexual Conduct was first published in 1973; a paperback edition was published in 1974. It has been a highly influential study on the sociological aspects of sexuality — in many ways the fons et origo of the social constructionist approach, and the foundational text to view sexuality as scripted. Two essays are provided by the original authors in this 25th Anniversary Retrospective. Gagnon locates the work in place,…

Put Up and Shut Up: Workplace Sexual Assaults
In the deviance literature, sexual assaults at work have not been given the sustained attention that harm to property or violation of production guidelines has received. This omission suggests that sexual harassment is considered normative and that when women fail to accommodate this reality, it is the survivor rather than the perpetrator who is considered deviant. This article reports on 64 cases of attempted or completed rape in a sample of het…

Hidden Agendas: Theory, Politics, and Experience in the Women's Movement
Political Generations and the Contemporary Women's Movement
Most traditional work by political sociologists conceives of social movement activity and politics as pertaining only to the public world and political activity as inherently masculine. Women are virtually invisible in these accounts. That the nature of political and social change is shaped by the organization of gender is a fact obscured in the conceptualizations typically employed. One such concept is political generation. Virtually no scholarl…
Graduate Women, Sexual Harassment, and University Policy
When I personally was propositioned by a male faculty member, the man did not covertly try to use his position to pressure me. But I felt that he had taken advantage of my position as a grad student and as a T.A. After all, he could have served on future committees which would determine whether or not I received financial aid. He could also have tried to put damaging information in my departmental file and I, of course, could do nothing since the…
Sex and the Workplace: The Impact of Sexual Behavior and Harassment on Women, Men, and Organizations
Coming Out at Work: Bridging the Private/Public Gap
Combining research on work and occupations with that describing the process of 'coming out' for homosexuals suggests several dimensions of work that affect the decision to reveal one's sexual identity in the context of work. Drawing on quantitative data on 228 lesbian workers, the analysis explores the relationship among workplace determinants, coworker sociability, and disclosure of sexual identity. Results indicate that among the dimensions exa…

The Office Affair: Myth and Reality for Heterosexual and Lesbian Women Workers
In the last few years, there has been increased interest in 'office affairs.' Although traditionally workplace sexual relationships were the subject of gossip, but little serious attention, they are currently considered tantamount to sexual harassment. However, their incidence and consequences remain relatively unknown. Understanding about these relationships assume heterosexuality; the emphasis is therefore on the combined effect of inequalities…
Consciousness About Sexual Harassment Among Heterosexual and Lesbian Women Workers
This paper explores the nature of sexual harassment as a subjective and multi‐faceted concept, one which challenges the meaning of taken‐for‐granted behaviors embedded in heterosexual interactions and relationships. Drawing on survey samples of 237 lesbian and 144 heterosexual working women, the study discusses the ways in which a woman's sexual identity affects her experiences and interpretation of interactions at work as sexual harassment. Four…
