What Makes Saint Martin Come Marching In? On Facilitating Holy Play
In the study of urban events on the boundaries between the religious and the secular, an underdeveloped theme is the facilitation and performance of sacrality. Two questions should be asked: to what extent is an event ritualized and sacralized and how is religion involved? A further question is how these events succeed in performing the sacred. This article uses ethnographic research into the Saint Martin's Day Parade in the Dutch city of Utrecht…
Flourishing Diversity: A Response to Markus Davidsen
The study of religion exceeds the boundaries of the comparative, or systematic, study of religion in a strict sense. Markus Davidsen considers this a problem. Scholars of religion should unite in order to prevent particularism and protect the discipline against postmodern tendencies. Therefore, a solid foundation is needed. This response argues that in the contemporary context religion itself is dispersed. This situation may bring about the negle…
The Function of Speech Acts in a Vatican II Declaration: Gravissimum Educationis
This paper provides an analysis of Gravissimum Educationis, the Vatican II declaration on Christian Education. The paper focusses on speech acts as text signals for an ideal reader within the declaration’s communication framework. To date, speech acts have not been scrutinized in Vatican II constitutions, decrees, or declarations. An analysis of performative utterances in Gravissimum Educationis is presented on the basis of J.R. Searle’s taxonomy…
Securitization, Islamic chaplaincy, and the issue of (de)radicalization of Muslim detainees in Dutch prisons
What position does organized Muslim chaplaincy in Dutch prisons take with respect to the prevention of radicalization and to the de-radicalization of detainees with a Muslim background? After describing the process of securitization of Salafism in the Netherlands, discussing the use of context-related concepts as radicalization, extremism and terrorism, and sketching the context and the making of Muslim chaplaincy, the article provides a brief ov…

The Liquidation of the Church
Is religion dying out in Western societies? Is personal spirituality taking its place? Both stories are inadequate. Institutional religion is not simply coming to an end in Western societies. Rather, its assets and properties are redistributed: large parts of the church have gone into liquidation. Religion is crossing the boundaries of the parish and appears in other social contexts. In the fields of leisure, health care and contemporary culture,…
Bingo! Holy play in experience-oriented society
What place is there for holy play in experience-oriented society? Is it possible and useful to make analytic distinctions between the liturgical quality of events? I explored these questions by doing research on the boundaries between the religious field and the field of leisure. Fifty site visits to public events in the Netherlands (2006–2014) resulted in a collection of ethnographic data. I used the concept of play as introduced by the Dutch hi…
Tintin as a Catholic comic: How Catholic Values Went Underground
Historically, the comic series Tintin originates in conservative and, indeed reactionary, circles in Belgian Catholicism. Hergé created Tintin for the children’s weekly of a newspaper that, at that time, shared the main themes of the reactionary Catholic movement: anti-communism, anti-capitalism, anti-Semitism and the fear of “secret societies”, and advocated a leading role for Catholic values in the public domain. During World War II, the advent…
Playing with Religion in Contemporary Theatre
Contemporary theatre sometimes uses religious language, symbols, and poses. What do these references mean? Reflection on four productions shows the usefulness of tools developed in the study of liturgy. First, this helps to produce an account of the roles of the sacred and of community in theatre shows. Secondly, this throws light on the appearance of religion in ‘liquid modernity’. Thirdly, the study of religion in theatre shows how boundaries b…
Three Types of Liquid Religion
This article explores ways to think of religion using Zygmunt Bauman’s concept of liquid modernity. The concept of liquid religion opens up perspectives for both “new” and “old” social forms of religion that seem to flourish within a liquid milieu. Attention is also drawn to three types of relationship between solid and liquid religion. The first type consists of liquid phenomena in the religious sphere: religious events, small communities, globa…

The Positioning of the Parish in a Context of Individualization
English Now that religious participation largely depends on individual choice, existing religious congregations find themselves confronted with the challenge of organizational renewal. Both sociological and theological authors disagree on two strategies as successful ways of coping with this new “market situation”. The first strategy is that of the service institution; the second, that of the exclusive firm. We conducted a survey among parish cou…
