Who’s In and Who’s Out? War News from Mexico and the Framing of Evil
In Richard Caton Woodville’s 1848 painting, War News from Mexico, eleven figures crowd in and around a portico. Eight white men occupy the same physical plane and respond to word of America’s victory in the Mexican War. Three other figures – black, female, or both – are outside the portico. Africa is frequently framed in a narrative that reduces or minimises its significance and achievements. We review geographical and historical perspectives of Africa and present data that provides Africa greater significance and allows us to consider post-colonial African economic achievements outside of a simplistic narrative. In January 2018, the African Union (AU) agreed to establish the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) to the free flow of goods and services within Africa. Simultaneously, the AU adopted a protocol supporting the free movement of persons between the countries of Africa.
