  • The "Real Self" Controversy: Toward an Integration of Humanistic and Interactionist Theory

    Open Access•Stephen R Wilson•ARTICLE•Journal of Humanistic Psychology•1988•Cited by: 10•References: 38

The logical status of the concept "real self" and its usefulness in psychological theory have been topics of some debate in this journal. Critics have argued that this concept stems from Maslow's tendency toward biological reductionism that caused him to ignore the fact, supposedly established by the symbolic interactionists, that the self is ultimately a social-cultural product. In this article, I take steps toward a new view of self-actualizati…

  • Becoming A Yogi: Resocialization and Deconditioning as Conversion Processes

    Stephen R Wilson•ARTICLE•Sociological Analysis•1984•Cited by: 6

This article distinguishes between two separate, but interrelated types of religious conversion processes; socialization and deconditioning. Socialization refers to the process by which the roles and norms of a group are learned. Deconditioning is a process where habitual and problematic ways of perceiving reality, resulting from initial socialization, are eliminated. Data from a participant observation study of residents in a Yoga ashram are pre…

  • The Concept of Stress: An Organizing Theme in the Introductory Course

    Stephen R Wilson•ARTICLE•Teaching Sociology•1983•Cited by: 1

0 ver the past three years, I have experimented with using the concept of stress as a central organizing theme in my introductory sociology courses. Since I have not really changed anything else in my course, I can only conclude that the stress theme is responsible for the increased interest and enthusiasm on the part of my students-an effect that has been reflected in higher student evaluations of the course. What follows is a brief description …

This article describes how the guru disciple relationship and the structure of the ashram set up conditions that foster personal and spiritual growth in residents of an ashram …

  • Ability Evaluation and Self-Evaluation as Types of Social Comparisons

    Stephen R Wilson•ARTICLE•Sociometry•1973•Cited by: 3

An analysis of Festinger's theory of social comparison processes suggests that the comparison of abilities really involves two distinct processes. Ability evaluation involves determining how one stands relative to others in the performance of the ability. Self-evaluation involves determining how one ought to perform by comparing with others similar to oneself on attributes related to the ability. The results of an experiment indicate that these t…

    Stephen R Wilson, Larry A Benner•ARTICLE•Sociometry•1971•Cited by: 14

Earlier experiments (see Wheeler et al., 1969) showed that when a person has a vague idea that he is somewhere in the middle of the group with respect to an ability, he will choose the person ranking highest in the ability as a comparison other when given the chance to gain more information about his position. These experiments utilized a private comparison situation where the outcome of the comparison would be known only by the subject. It was, …

    Stephen R Wilson•ARTICLE•Sociometry•1969•Cited by: 3

This study was designed to determine the effect of the presence of an observer upon laboratory discussion groups under two conditions of task saliency. However, only the Observed versus Not-Observed conditions were effectively manipulated. With an Observer in the room, groups had higher rates of TaskOriented interaction and lower rates of Task-Irrelevant interaction than groups not aware of observation but there was no difference in actual produc…
