  • Sociometry

    Open Access•Barbara F Meeker•OTHER•The Blackwell Encyclopedia of…•2015•References: 2

The word “sociometry” was coined in the early twentieth century by Jacob Levi Moreno (1889–1974). Moreno, one of the pioneers of psychotherapy, is also credited with developing psychotherapeutic techniques such as psychodrama. To him, sociometry was a way of uncovering the underlying emotional structure of a small group by asking group members which other members they would choose or reject as partners in specific roles such as roommate or fellow…

  • Exploring Nonlinear Path Models via Computer Simulation

    Open Access•Robert K Leik, Barbara F Meeker•ARTICLE•Social Science Computer Review•1996•References: 3

Although many causal relationships are nonlinear, there has been little general exploration of the implications of using nonlinear forms in multivariate causal models. A program called MULTPATH 1 has been developed that enables a researcher to create a path model with up to 6 variables, choose any of 10 curve forms for each of the paths, specify the extent of random error in each of the paths, and generate plots of resulting distributions. Three …

  • Computer Simulation for Exploring Theories: Models of Interpersonal Cooperation and Competition

    Open Access•Robert K Leik, Barbara F Meeker•ARTICLE•Sociological Perspectives•1995•Cited by: 2•References: 3

Computer simulation for exploring substantive theories is both powerful and convenient, but there are few standards for doing simulations. Some criteria are suggested and their importance illustrated in detail via our adaptation and augmentation of a species competition model to reflect interpersonal cooperation or competition. Outcomes of the simulation and their substantive interpretation can vary due to minor variation in parameters, to conven…

  • Achieving fairness in the face of competing concerns: The different effects of individual and group characteristics

    Gregory C Elliott, Barbara F Meeker•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality and Social…•1986•Cited by: 6

This study investigates preferences among allocation procedures available for use by those distributing rewards for individual performance in a group effort. Our first hypothesis is that allocators try to balance the payoff distribution in response to all available information about the individual members. We manipulated a target person's level of contribution to the group effort and level of financial need. Results showed a main effect for both …

  • Groupwork with Women, Groupwork with Men: An Overview of Gender Issues in Social Groupwork Practice

  • Cooperative Orientation, Trust, and Reciprocity

    Open Access•Barbara F Meeker•ARTICLE•Human Relations•1984•Cited by: 3•References: 5

Two related processes are hypothesized to mediate the effect of cooperative orientation on cooperative behavior in a conflict situation: development of trust and development of positive reciprocity. Hypotheses derived from assumptions about these processes are tested in two experiments using a two-person game situation with one-way feedback. Independent variables are: orientation (to group vs. to individual outcomes): level of cooperative feedbac…

  • Modifiers of the equity effect: Group outcome and causes for individual performance

    Gregory C Elliott, Barbara F Meeker•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality and Social…•1984•Cited by: 3

Department of SociologyUniversity of Maryland, College ParkIn this article we use vignettes to investigate the implementation of an equityallocation scheme (to each according to contribution) for distributing rewards togroup members working independently on a collective task. The equity hypothesisis that information about individual contribution leads to an unequal (but equitable)division of rewards. Group outcome (success or failure) and an indi…

  • Sex Roles and Interpersonal Behavior in Task-Oriented Groups

    Barbara F Meeker, P A Weitzel-O'Neill•ARTICLE•American Sociological Review•1977•Cited by: 90•References: 9

In the past, sociologists have proposed that men and women approach situations in which they have to work with other people differently; that men are or instrumental specialists, while women are or expressive specialists. Subsequent advances in research on the social psychology of small groups, on families, and on personality has largely removed the theoretical and empirical supports for this proposition. On the other hand, researchers continue t…

  • Decisions and Exchange

    Barbara F Meeker•ARTICLE•American Sociological Review•1971•Cited by: 58•References: 11

A formal theory is developed to deal with some aspects of social behavior. Values are defined as givens, and the of values is defined as decision-making. Exchange decisions can follow one or more exchange rules-rationality, reciprocity, altruism, status consistency, or competition. Formal definitions are developed for these rules using concepts from game theory. From the definitions and the assumption that rules operate as social norms, a number …
