Why are materialists less satisfied
Culture and Subjective Well-Being
The question of what constitutes the good life has been pondered for millennia. Yet only in the last decades has the study of well-being become a scientific endeavor. This book is based on the idea that we can empirically study quality of life and make cross-society comparisons of subjective well-being (SWB). A potential problem in studying SWB across societies is that of cultural relativism: if societies have different values, the members of tho…
Cross-Cultural Variations in Predictors of Life Satisfaction: Perspectives from Needs and Values
The authors tested for cross-cultural difference in predictors of life satisfaction. In Study 1 (39 nations, N = 54,446), they found that financial satisfaction was more strongly associated with life satisfaction in poorer nations, whereas home life satisfaction was more strongly related to life satisfaction in wealthy nations. In Study 2 (39 nations, N = 6,782), the authors found that satisfaction with esteem needs (e.g., the self and freedom) p…
Dispositional Envy
Although many scholars have argued that individual differences in proneness to envy can have wide-ranging implications for social interactions, the empirical testing of these claims is largely undeveloped. We created a single-factor Dispositional Envy Scale (DES) to measure individual differences in tendencies to envy, and examined some of the implications of such differences. Study 1 indicated that the DES is a reliable, stable measure, containi…

Self-awarenesss and transgression in children: Two field studies
Two field studies explored the relationship between self-awareness and transgressive behavior. In the first study, 363 Halloween trick-or-treaters were instructed to only take one candy. Self-awareness induced by the presence of a mirror placed behind the candy bowl decreased transgression rates for children who had been individuated by asking them their name and address, but did not affect the behavior of children left anonymous. Self-awareness …

Pitfalls in human research: Ten pivotal points
Deindividuation: Causes and Consequences
Previous definitions of deindividuation are reviewed and a current conceptualization is offered. The research literature is reviewed under possible antecedents to deindividuation. It is concluded that research has failed to confirm the causal role of deindividuation in releasing antisocial behavior. Research strategies are suggested which will help more quickly to verify or disconfirm the existence and causal role of the construct
Ethnic Preference of College Students for Their Own and Other Racial Groups
Ethnic preferences of black and white college students were measured using subjects' ratings of employment applications of either Afro-Americans, Asian-Americans, or Whites. Participants rated the “applicants” on items falling into three broad dimensions: inferred traits possessed by the applicant ( e.g., intelligence ), personal liking for the applicant, and heterosexual attraction to the applicant. The data revealed that whites preferred white …

Effects of deindividuation variables on stealing among Halloween trick-or-treaters
Effects of prior destructive behavior, anonymity, and group presence on deindividuation and aggression
Three of Zimbardo's deindividuation input variables (group presence, anonymity, and arousal) were manipulated in laboratory experiment, and their effects on aggression and deindividuation were measured. Only arousal produced a significant increase in aggression (p less than .05), while group presence produced a significant decrease in aggression (p less than .01). Anonymity had no significant effect on subjects' aggressiveness. Deindividuation pe…
Personality research: Components of variance attributable to the person and the situation
Studies involving personality and situational variables were surveyed. Studies permitting determination of main effects and interactions involving these variables have increased since 1950. In one comparison, situational main effects were significant in 65.5% of the cases, whereas the figure was 31% for individual difference variables and 59.9% for interactions. In another comparison, 35% of situational main effects accounted for more than 10% of…
Effects of altered responsibility, cognitive set, and modeling on physical aggression and deindividuation
This laboratory investigation using 64 college students as subjects assessed the role of three disinhibiting variables in producing both physical aggression and an internal state of deindividuation. Altered responsibility, congnitive set, and modeling were manipulated in a factorial design, and all three variables significantly increased physical aggression. No interaction produced significant results. The increase due to altered responsibility a…
Selected Demographic Variables in Altruism
Individuals receiving wallets (86 males and 2 females) at selected locations in Seattle were unobtrusively observed and sex of retriever, an age estimate, dress type, and location of drop were recorded. The return of an intact wallet ($1.25 in cash and contents such as pictures) was used as a measure of altruism. The wallets were dropped in the entrance to an adult bookstore (specializing in erotica) and in the entrance to a regular paperback boo…
Maternal Child-Rearing Attitudes as Antecedents of Self-Actualization
Great stress in psychological research has been placed on the antecedents of human malfunctioning, while studies of psychological health are rare (2). The present study was an attempt to discover some of the parental attitudes of mochers which are related to selfactualization in their adult offspring. The Personal Orientation Inventory (4) was completed by 52 California State University at Fresno students (29 females and 23 males) as a measure of…
