Lucy R Mercier, Rena D Harold et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Social Service Research•2013•References: 23

Lesbian patients and their families may be exposed to discriminatory practices in the health care system. This qualitative study of 57 Midwestern lesbian parents used open- and closed-ended questions to examine the experiences the respondents had with their primary and secondary health care providers. Four themes emerged from the data: systemic barriers to health care, coming out to providers, seeking lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender-frien…

    Michael S Caserta, Dale A Lund et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Women & Aging•1989

Using a sample of 242 older widows at 2-3 months following the death of their spouse, the following research questions were examined: (1) What are the interrelationships among older widows' personal resources and their bereavement outcomes? (3) Is age related to both outside employment and income, and if so, do outcomes and personal resources differ according to these…

  • Identifying Elderly with Coping Difficulties after Two Years of Bereavement

Open Access•Dale A Lund, Margaret Dimond et al.•ARTICLE•OMEGA - Journal of Death and Dying•1986

This study answers three research questions. First, what proportion of the elderly are experiencing major coping difficulties after two years of bereavement? Second, what factors in early bereavement distinguish between those with difficulties and the others? Third, what set of factors are the best predictors of coping difficulties at two years? Of the 138 persons who completed a two-year longitudinal study of bereavement, twenty-five (18%) were …

  • Stress, Self-Esteem and Coping During Bereavement Among the Elderly

Robert J Johnson, Dale A Lund et al.•ARTICLE•Social Psychology Quarterly•1986

The purpose of the study was to assess the stability of self-esteem as a coping resource during bereavement and to develop a dynamic model of the efficacy of coping ability in relation to the perceived stressfulness of the spouse's death. Data were obtained from a longitudinal study of bereavement. Interviews and mailed questionnaires were completed by 192 persons at three time periods which covered the first year of bereavement. Results indicate…

  • Impact of Bereavement on the Self-Conceptions of Older Surviving Spouses

    Open Access•Dale A Lund, Michael S Caserta et al.•ARTICLE•Symbolic Interaction•1986•Cited by: 1•References: 15

The purpose of this longitudinal study was to assess the extent to which the social anchorage dimension of the self-concept is impacted by the death of a spouse among a sample of older surviving spouses. Social anchorage was measured by the Twenty Statements Test (TST) in mailed questionnaires and consisted of self-statements that signify important social relationships and group memberships. As hypothesized, the 42 bereaved persons had lower soci…

At the conclusion of a two-year longitudinal study of bereavement, 138 elderly persons were asked about their willingness to participate in support groups. Forty-four percent (N = 61) reported that they would have liked to participate. These persons were compared with those who did not want to participate with respect to sociodemographic, health, social support and psychosocial characteristics measured at six time periods. Nonstatistical patterns…

  • A Survival Analysis of Childhood Family History

David M Fergusson, L John Horwood et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Marriage and the Family•1985•Cited by: 2

The history of family placement was studied in a birth cohort of New Zealand preschool children. This showed the presence of a complex process of change over time. By 6 years, 16% of children born to two-parent families had experienced a family breakdown; and extrapolation of these trends suggests that by the time this cohort reaches 16 years about 35% to 40% of children born to two-parent families will have experienced family breakdown. For chil…

  • The Effect of Psychological Distress on Physician Utilization: A Prospective Study

Richard C Tessler, Richard Tessler et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Health and Social…•1976•Cited by: 38

This paper examines the hypothesis that psychological distress is causally related to physician utilization among enrollees in a prepaid group practice. Measures of distress are constructed from questions included in a servey interview, while the utilization data come from medical records. Distress levels were measured prior to the period of utilization studied. The results show a positive relationship between distress and physician utilization, …
