Connecting Through Creativity: Bracelets and Reflecting Teams in Therapy
A university clinical practicum team consisting of five graduate students, one doctoral supervisor assistant student, and a licensed marriage and family therapist faculty supervisor oversaw a case where the client was shy and hesitant to engage in sessions without the mother present. This clinical case study shows how creativity was utilized with a reflecting team by creating friendship-style bracelets for the client. This allowed the client to f…
Bayesian average of classical estimates for panel data: Can the puzzle of the shape of the regional Kuznets curve be solved
We evaluate the robustness of the regional Kuznets curve using the Bayesian average of classical estimates for panel data and identify the robust determinants of regional inequality. Our simulation exercise suggests that this method recovers the variables underlying the true data generating process. Our results indicate that in addition to real GDP per capita, linear and quadratic, the most robust determinants of regional inequality are natural r…
Mapping the Dimensions of Poverty Through Big Data, Socioeconomic Surveys and Machine Learning in Cambodia
Cambodia has witnessed rapid economic growth in recent years; however, it remains one of the most economically vulnerable nations in Southeast Asia, grappling with persistent poverty challenges. Accurately understanding the multiple dimensions of poverty is essential for promoting sustainable development and guiding targeted policy interventions. Yet, traditional poverty data are often outdated and lack the granularity needed for effective subnat…
Creating public value in regional policy. Bringing citizens back in
We develop a novel citizen-centred multi-dimensional approach to public value creation in regional policy. Drawing on 47 citizen focus groups in 16 European regions, public values are analysed through an interpretative comparative approach. Goal attainment is a positive and widely held value. However, evaluations of institutional performance and democratic values are more negative. The findings have significant implications for public value manag…
Social and Economic Convergence Across Districts in Indonesia: A Spatial Econometric Approach
This paper evaluates social and economic convergence across 514 districts in Indonesia over the 2010-2018 period. By applying spatial panel-data methods, this paper re-examines the regional convergence hypothesis using a novel dataset on the human development index (HDI) and GDP per capita. These two indicators are used as proxies for social and economic progress, respectively. Results show a significant neighborhood effect on the convergence pro…
Regional convergence and spatial dependence in Thailand: Global and local assessments
This article studies the evolution of per-capita income disparities and spatial dependence across 77 provinces of Thailand over the period 1995–2017. Results show that – on average – regional income disparities are decreasing over time and initially poor provinces are catching up with rich provinces, indicating the presence of sigma and beta convergence. However, when we study the evolution of disparities – beyond the average – we reject the hypo…
The quality of government and administrative performance: Explaining Cohesion Policy compliance, absorption and achievements across EU regions
Policy? This article analyses the relationship between the quality of government and multiple dimensions of administrative performance in Cohesion Policy. Using primary data on government quality combined with EU performance data for the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) in the period 2007-13, regression analysis is undertaken for 173 European regions. The results confirm that government quality is a key determinant of administrative perf…
The impact of EU Cohesion Policy on European identity: A comparative analysis of EU regions
This article investigates the role of European Union Cohesion Policy in the development of European identity, drawing on an original and representative survey in 17 regions across 12 member states. We advance a theoretical model which distinguishes cognitive, instrumental and communicative drivers of identity formation. Contrary to existing scholarship, we find that EU Cohesion Policy does contribute to European identity. Citizens that perceive b…
Regional income disparities and convergence clubs in Indonesia: New district-level evidence
This article aims to re-examine the regional convergence hypothesis on income in Indonesia over the 2000–2017 period. By applying a non-linear dynamic factor model, this article tests the club convergence hypothesis using a novel dataset of income at the district level. The results show significant five convergence clubs in Indonesian districts’ income dynamics, implying the persistence of income disparity problems across districts even after imp…

Rescaling urban development policy in the EU: The impact of integrated place-based approaches in Cohesion Policy
This article investigates the role of European Union (EU) Cohesion Policy in urban development policy rescaling following the introduction of a strengthened regulatory framework for integrated territorial development in 2014–20. We find variations in the rescaling of sustainable urban development policies in the Netherlands, Poland and Spain shaped by domestic politics, path dependence and institutional capacity. The theoretical implication is th…
EU Cohesion Policy under the Media Spotlight: Exploring Territorial and Temporal Patterns in News Coverage and Tone
This article explores the territorial and temporal patterns of EU cohesion policy media coverage. The topic content and tone of news are analysed using topic modelling and sentiment analysis techniques, which are applied to a new corpus of over 4,000 English and Spanish news stories from the period 2010 to 2017 across three territorial levels. In line with our theoretical expectations, we found significant differences in the tone used across terr…

Late-Holocene gallery forest retrogression in the Venezuelan Guayana: New data and implications for the conservation of a cultural landscape
Fire is considered a major threat to forest conservation in the Neotropics. Palaeoecological studies are critical for understanding the long-term interactions of climate, fire, and human activities in the savanna–forest dynamic. Here, new data from palynological analyses conducted in sedimentary records from the northern edge of the Amazon Basin, the Gran Sabana, southeast of Canaima National Park (CNP) are presented. Four radiocarbon ages from Q…
The Post-2013 Reform of Eu Cohesion Policy and the Place-Based Narrative
This article examines the role and use of discourse as a means of affecting EU cohesion policy reform. A discursive shift is traced to a place-based narrative, which sought to re-legitimize and reconnect the policy with its foundational principles during the post-2013 policy review. It is argued that the impact of the narrative on the Commission's proposals has been only partially effective owing to deep-rooted ideational, interest-driven and org…

Clouds, clocks and policy dynamics: A path-(inter)dependent analysis of EU cohesion policy
Recognising the limitations of existing conceptualisations of path dependence, this article advances a ‘path-interdependent’ approach to account for endogenous policy change by incorporating a more central role for agency through learning and problem-solving mechanisms. Additionally, it argues that monolithic conceptualisations of institutions should be unpacked to reveal their configurative elements. In doing so, attention is drawn to the way in…
Administrative reform and unintended consequences: An assessment of the EU Cohesion policy ‘audit explosion
This paper investigates the effects of administrative reform in the Commission on policy implementation and outcomes through a study of EU Cohesion policy auditing. It argues that the growth in audit has taken a distinctively compliance-oriented form, in contrast with the performance audit model adopted in other countries that have embraced administrative modernization agendas. Further, the link between organizational efficiency and governance ef…

Made to Measure? Europeanization, Goodness of Fit and Adaptation Pressures in EU Competition Policy and Regional Aid
The measurement of Europeanization and adaptational pressures can be facilitated by three elements: an EU-wide perspective to enable a comparative assessment of impacts and outcomes; using a clear example of a new European-level policy initiative that impacts on all member states simultaneously; and a detailed knowledge of the ex ante and ex post situation in each country. This article incorporates these elements in a comparative case study of ad…
Who Governs EU Cohesion Policy? Deconstructing the Reforms of the Structural Funds
This article re‐assesses the multi‐level governance debate and specifically the ‘renationalization thesis’, with respect to EU cohesion policy. It focuses on two of the principles of decision‐making under the structural funds: concentration (decisions on where the money is spent) and programming (decisions on how it is spent). The analysis takes a longitudinal approach, examining each of the policy phases from 1988 until the recent debate on the …
Conditioning and Fine‐Tuning Europeanization: Negotiating Regional Policy Maps under the EU's Competition and Cohesion Policies
Most studies of Europeanization tend to adopt a top‐down conceptual perspective exploring the impact of the EU on Member States' policies, polities and politics. Whilst it is generally recognized that Europeanization involves reciprocal relationships between the EU and Member States, few studies seek to explore the nature of such interaction. This study sheds light on such processes by exploring the negotiation of regional policy maps under the E…
