The Bureaucratic Paradox of Citizen Agency
Public service co‐production is often framed as a means of creating public value, yet its dynamics are complex when citizen‐led participation is catalyzed by strong public institutions. This mixed‐methods study examines government‐catalyzed, citizen‐centric co‐production in Shanghai, China, where the state provides institutional support, policy legitimacy, and infrastructure while citizens undertake much of the work of deliberation, coordination,…
Why patients’ knowledge alone isn’t enough
Background Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) prevalence is rising in China, necessitating an understanding of knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) among affected women to inform interventions. Methods This cross-sectional study (June 2020–June 2024) surveyed 3,426 Chinese women with GDM, aged 20–60 years, from urban and rural prenatal clinics across Qingdao city, China. A validated 25-item KAP questionnaire used a three-option response for…

How to attract commercial investment to provide infrastructure and public service is an important issue for governments around the world. Substance use and HIV-risk behaviors among HIV-positive men who have sex with men in China

Identifying risk factors that contribute to HIV-risk behaviors will help to curb the rapid HIV transmission among this group. Our hypothesis was that MSM with substance use were more likely to conduct HIV-risk behaviors, even after accounting for repeated measures. In the current study, we employed a …

This study probes the differences between two generations of nongmingong by presenting and analyzing the ethnographic fieldwork data collected in a labor-intensive enterprise. In the article the authors tend to stress two points. The first is about the attitude to the choice of “reflux” and “job-hopping”. It is suggested that “reflux” and “job-hopping” are two different practices and attempts for both new and old nongmingong when confronted with …
"Migrant-Worker "Intergenerational Relationships
Based on research in a labor-intensive enterprise, this study discusses the differences between new and old migrant workers. One consists of the choice of, and attitude toward "flow-backs" (hui liu) and "switching jobs" (zhuan gong) on the part of new and old migrant workers. The authors maintain that "flow-backs" and "switching jobs" are the different means by which the new and old generation of migrant workers face future developments and handl…
Research on "Job Hopping" by Migrant Workers from the Countryside
The turnover of labor-intensive personnel in businesses is extremely frequent and is primarily manifested in "flowing back" and in "switching jobs." Field surveys and research have demonstrated that frequent and extensive job switching, as well as the rapid turnover of personnel, has had a significant impact on businesses. There are many reasons for migrant workers from the countryside to switch jobs, but young migrant workers from the countrysid…
