  • Evaporative coolers and wildfire smoke exposure: A climate justice issue in hot, dry regions

Open Access•Gina Solomon, Gina M Solomon et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2025

Low-income families in dry regions, including in the Southwestern United States, frequently cool their homes with evaporative (“swamp”) coolers (ECs). While inexpensive and energy efficient compared to central air conditioners, ECs pull unfiltered outdoor air into the home, creating a health hazard to occupants when wildfire smoke and heat events coincide. A community-engaged research project to reduce wildfire smoke in homes was conducted in Cal…

  • Returning Individual Tap Water Testing Results to Research Study Participants after a Wildfire Disaster

Open Access•Julie Von Behren, Michelle Wong et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

After the devastating wildfire that destroyed most of the town of Paradise, California in 2018, volatile organic compounds were found in water distribution pipes. Approximately 11 months after the fire, we collected tap water samples from 136 homes that were still standing and tested for over 100 chemicals. Each participant received a customized report showing the laboratory findings from their sample. Our goal was to communicate individual water…

  • A Pilot Biomonitoring Study of Cumulative Phthalates Exposure among Vietnamese American Nail Salon Workers

Open Access•Julia Varshavsky, Julia R Varshavsky et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

Many California nail salon workers are low-income Vietnamese women of reproductive age who use nail products daily that contain androgen-disrupting phthalates, which may increase risk of male reproductive tract abnormalities during pregnancy. Yet, few studies have characterized phthalate exposures among this workforce. To characterize individual metabolites and cumulative phthalates exposure among a potentially vulnerable occupational group of na…

  • Heavy Metals in California Women Living in a Gold Mining-Impacted Community

Open Access•Julie Von Behren, Ruiling Liu et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2019

Gold mining activities occurred throughout the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in California, leaving behind persistent toxic contaminants in the soil, dust, and water that include arsenic and cadmium. Despite a high level of concern among local residents about potential exposure and high breast cancer rates, no biomonitoring data has been collected to evaluate the levels of heavy metals. We conducted a study to characterize the urinary …

  • Environmental Street Audits and Black Carbon Measurements in Vietnamese Immigrant Communities

Thu Quach, Erika Garcia et al.•ARTICLE•Progress in community health…•2015•References: 2

Our results showed higher mean BC concentrations at the regional and neighborhood levels compared with the statewide concentration (0.737 μg/m3). Community members collected quantitative and qualitative data including real-time BC data. The audit process helped to initiate dialogue about environmental health issues in the Vietnamese communities

  • Environmental Street Audits and Black Carbon Measurements in Vietnamese Immigrant Communities

Environmental Street Audits and Black Carbon Measurements in Vietnamese Immigrant Communities Thu Quach, PhD, MPH, Erika Garcia, MPH, Julie Von Behren, MPH, Jacqueline Tran, PhD, Tina Duyen Tran, MPH, Lisa Fu, MPH, Scarlett Gomez, PhD, Vinh Luu, Thanh Ahlfenger, and Peggy Reynolds, PhD What Is the Problem? • Asian-American communities may face many of the hazards that other communities of color and low-income communities face, but there have been…

  • Developing a Proactive Research Agenda to Advance Nail Salon Worker Health, Safety, and Rights

Thu Quach, Julia Liou et al.•ARTICLE•Progress in community health…•2012•Cited by: 3

The participation of diverse stakeholders in the discussions allowed for cross-dialogue on a complex issue, helped to align different stakeholders as allies, and identified critical resources to addressing research gaps

  • The Association Between Neighborhood Characteristics and Body Size and Physical Activity in the California Teachers Study Cohort

Theresa H M Keegan, Susan Hurley et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2012•Cited by: 2•References: 44

Objectives. We considered interactions between physical activity and body mass index (BMI) and neighborhood factors. Methods. We used recursive partitioning to identify predictors of low recreational physical activity ( 2 ) among 118 315 women in the California Teachers Study. Neighborhood characteristics were based on 2000 US Census data and Reference US business listings. Results. Low physical activity and being overweight or obese were associa…

  • Characterizing Workplace Exposures in Vietnamese Women Working in California Nail Salons

Thu Quach, Robert Gunier et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2011•Cited by: 1•References: 8

Objectives. We engaged Vietnamese nail salon workers in a community-based participatory research (CBPR) study to measure personal and area concentrations of solvents in their workplace. Methods. We measured average work-shift concentrations of toluene, ethyl acetate, and isopropyl acetate among 80 workers from 20 salons using personal air monitors. We also collected area samples from 3 salons using summa canisters. Results. For personal measureme…

  • Residential mobility in the California Teachers Study: Implications for Geographic Differences in Disease Rates

  • Social Connections and Risk for Cancer: Prospective Evidence from the Alameda County Study

    Peggy Reynolds, George A Kaplan•ARTICLE•Behavioral Medicine•1990

The association between social connections and cancer incidence, mortality, and prognosis during 17 years of follow-up was examined in a population-based sample of 6,848 adults who lived in Alameda County, California, in 1965. Estimates of relative hazards were derived from Cox regression modeling, adjusting for age, smoking, physical health at baseline, alcohol consumption, and adjusted household income. Women who were socially isolated were at …
