Open Access•Manuel Sánchez De Miguel, Aintzane Orkaizagirre Gómara et al.•ARTICLE•Education Sciences•2023

Self-determination theory (SDT) suggests that motivation can interact with resilience and perceived competence. The climate-related characteristics of the classroom can influence student motivation. This study aimed to evaluate the associations between the differentiated motivation of theoretical and practical teaching, resilience, and perceived competence, considering the number of students per class and the profiles of the lecturers. A total of…

  • A randomized controlled trial to test an HIV-prevention intervention for Latino gay and bisexual men

    Alex Carballo-Diéguez, Curtis Dolezal et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2005

At the time of this writing, no randomized controlled trial (RCT) of an intervention to reduce unsafe sex among Latino gay and bisexual men (LGBM) had been published. We report the results of an RCT conducted in New York City in which 180 LGBM were assigned either to an intervention developed specifically for this population or to a wait-list control group. The intervention was based on empowerment theory and used factors identified in prior rese…

  • Nutrient balance in water harvesting soils

    Open Access•F Díaz, F Dı́az et al.•ARTICLE•Sociedade & natureza•2005•References: 1

Dryland farming on Fuerteventura and Lanzarote (Canary Islands, Spain), which has an annual rainfall of less than 150 mm/year, has been based traditionally on water harvesting techniques (known locally as "gavias").Periods of high productivity alternate with those of very low yield. The systems are sustainable in that they reduce erosive processes, contribute to soil and soil-water conservation and are largely responsible for maintaining the soil'…

  • Water cost and availability

Robert H Gilman, Grace S Marquis et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1993•Cited by: 2•References: 14

OBJECTIVES. This study was conducted to determine whether poor hygiene practices are owing to difficulty in getting enough water and/or to ignorance of sanitary principles. METHODS. In a water-scarce shantytown in Lima, Peru, we observed in 12-hour periods over 3 consecutive days the amount of water and soap used for personal and domestic activities in 53 families and the frequency with which direct fecal contamination of hands was interrupted by…

  • Neonatal tetanus in Peru

Louis Vernacchio, Guillermo Madico et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1993•References: 8

We used a modified enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) to investigate tetanus immunity in 232 pregnant Peruvian women. One hundred forty-two (61.2%) had protective antitoxin titers (> or = 0.01 IU/mL). Protective titers correlated positively with the number of toxoid doses reported during the current pregnancy. A majority of women reporting no toxoid doses during the current pregnancy had at least one prenatal health care visit. We evaluate…
