The mathematics of the ecological footprint revisited: An axiomatic approach
In this paper, we take an axiomatic approach to the design of ecological footprint indices. Our focus is put on the heterogeneity of land with respect to types and regions, at the core of an inherent aggregation problem. We propose an axiomatic characterization of the ecological footprint index with two fundamentally new axioms, symmetry and independence, which can resolve the problem of land heterogeneity. It is shown that a unique index, up to …
Normative identity work: Exploring Erich Fromm’s perspective on self and society
This article explores the potential of normative identity work to foster humanistic transformation, drawing from Erich Fromm’s social theory. By engaging with Fromm’s insights into the interplay between individuals and societal structures, the analysis demonstrates how identity work – understood as an ongoing process of self-construction within social contexts – can confront what Fromm terms the ‘pathology of normalcy’. Central to the discussion …

New Normalcy? Consumption and identity between reproduction of social inequalities and social transformation in Brazil
The Covid-19 pandemic has been transforming economic, political and social realities into a so-called "new normalcy". Learning to cope with this contingency requires (re)construction of people's identity. In this study, we critically analyze the narratives of change and the consumption practices of Brazilians interviewed during the period of social distancing. We follow a critical social-psychological approach based on the works of Fromm, Rosa an…

The Structure of Scientific Revolutions
A good book may have the power to change the way we see the world, but a great book actually becomes part of our daily consciousness, pervading our thinking to the point that we take it for granted, and we forget how provocative and challenging its ideas once were-and still are. The Structure of Scientific Revolutions is that kind of book. When it was first published in 1962, it was a landmark event in the history and philosophy of science. And f…

Mathematical vs. Experimental Traditions in the Development of Physical Science Anyone who studies the history of scientific development repeatedly encounters a question, one version of which would be, Are the sciences one or many? Ordinarily that question is evoked by concrete problems of narrative organization, and these become especially acute when the historian of science is asked to survey his subject in lectures or in a book of significant …

A Documentary History of the Problem of Fall From Kepler to Newton. Alexandre Koyré
This is a review of Alexandre Koyré's book, "A Documentary History of the Problem of Fall from Kepler to Newton." Kuhn praises Koyré's meticulous scholarship and insightful analysis of the development of the concept of gravity. He highlights Koyré's focus on the conceptual shifts that occurred during this period, rather than simply presenting a chronological account of discoveries. Kuhn emphasizes the importance of understanding the historical co…

Logic of Discovery or Psychology of Research?
My object in these pages is to juxtapose the view of scientific development outlined in my book, The Structure of Scientific Revolutions , with the better known views of our chairman, Sir Karl Popper. Ordinarily I should decline such an undertaking, for I am not so sanguine as Sir Karl about the utility of confrontations. Besides, I have admired his work for too long to turn critic easily at this date. Nevertheless, I am persuaded that for this o…

Notes on Lakatos
The invitation which has brought me here to comment on Professor Lakatos’ paper has given me much pleasure, for I have long been an admirer of his work, particularly of his early four-part paper, ‘Proofs and Refutations’. That does not mean, of course, that we have often agreed, but I have enjoyed the arguments that resulted and looked forward to this one. My pleasure, furthermore, was considerably enhanced when I discovered that Lakatos was goin…

The Essential Tension: Selected Studies in Scientific Tradition and Change
Thomas Kuhn is very well known in the history of science and his book The Structure of Scientific Revolutions remains one of the most cited academic works of the last century. Kuhn’s use of the term “paradigm” had a lasting impact on the language, twisting a term that had previously meant “model” or “example” so that it signified a consensus within a field of research (among other things), which can sometimes very quickly following innovations (w…
