An information processing model of learning
This paper reports an evaluation of the effectiveness of changes made to a first year laboratory course in inorganic chemistry at a Scottish university. All the changes were consistent with four hypotheses about the design of effective laboratory experiences. The hypotheses were developed from an analysis of an information processing model of learning. The changes to the laboratory programme were made and evaluated over a period of three years an…
Why is science difficult to learn? Things are seldom what they seem
The difficulties of learning science are related to the nature of science itself and to the methods by which science is customarily taught without regard to what is known about children's learning. An information processing model is proposed to guide thinking and research in this area.
Understanding learning difficulties-A predictive research model
This paper arises from investigations of the topics in science which students perceive to be difficult. An information processing model is described which relates student performance to the amount of information to be processed in a learning or problem-solving situation. When the student working memory capacity is exceeded, there is a sharp drop in performance, but some students (〈/i>10%) continue to operate efficiently with problems which exceed…
Towards a Model for Attitude Change
Summaries English The place of attitude growth in the educational process is assuming an increased importance today in our schools. A broad definition of ‘attitude’ is proposed, and various types of attitude are discussed. The relationship between cognition and attitude growth in an educational setting is explored, reference being made to a number of recent empirical studies in relation to science education. Before building up a possible model fo…
Is knowledge enough
Little formal training in skills is given within undergraduate courses in chemistry. The paper describes an attempt to correct this through the introduction of specially devised exercises. These are described and evaluated
