Simulation training for invasive cardiovascular procedures
BACKGROUNDS: Interventional cardiology training has a long learning curve, with potential procedural risks to patients and clinicians. We aimed to assess whether mentored simulation-based training with 3D-printed models can improve the skills of beginners in coronary diagnostic procedures in a pilot randomized trial. METHODS: Twenty-nine final-year medical students recruited from a single University were lectured on the fundamentals of invasive c…
Slow pentatonic sequences facilitate sleep onset
Previous literature on the effects of musical stimuli in facilitating sleep onset has produced mixed results. This study aimed to test the efficacy of very slow pentatonic melodic sequences in facilitating sleep onset compared with a silence control condition. Twenty-two participants slept for four nights in a sleep lab with polysomnographic recording. The four nights included a first adaptation night and three experimental nights. Two nights inc…
Eye and lips in artistic profiles
Distortions related to eye and lip morphometry were investigated in two studies comparing photographic versus artistic profiles. In the first study, 298 artistic profiles encompassing the whole art history were compared to 300 photographic profiles. The 2 groups were compared for shape with Procrustes analysis and for size by using 8 indexes. Estimated age was inserted as covariate. The results showed that artists exaggerated eye height and width…
Perceived Tension, Movement, and Pleasantness in Harmonic Musical Intervals and Noises
Perceived valence, tension, and movement of harmonic musical intervals (from the unison to the octave presented in a low- and high-register) and standard noises (brown, pink, white, blue, purple) were assessed in two studies that differed in the crossmodal procedure by which tension and movement were rated: proprioceptive device or visual analog scale. Valence was evaluated in both studies with the visual analog scale. In a preliminary study, the…
Musical mode and visual-spatial cross-modal associations in infants and adults
The classification of major and minor musical stimuli along five dichotomous scales (happy–sad, pleasant–unpleasant, up–down, light–dark, and warm–cold colors) was investigated in two studies involving 51 children aged 4–6 years, and 168 adults. Musical stimuli were six chords and six harmonized melodies differing in mode (major, minor). Furthermore, fluid intelligence was assessed in both infants and adults. The associations between major mode a…
The million-dollar question
Higher education institutions are increasingly concerned with the professional insertion of graduates in the labour market and with the design of institutional mechanisms to facilitate students’ transition from higher education to work, particularly given the context of scarcity of financial resources and the rise of graduate unemployment. This issue has been addressed, inter alia, through the creation of study programmes with internships. Despit…
Emotions and Stress Increase Respiratory Resistance in Asthma
OBJECTIVES: Clinical reports suggest that various emotions and types of stress can precipitate asthmatic symptoms, but there is little experimental evidence to substantiate this claim. We studied the impact of different emotional states and stress on respiratory resistance in asthmatic and nonasthmatic individuals. METHODS: Participants (24 asthmatic and 24 nonasthmatic patients) viewed short film sequences selected to induce anxiety, anger, depr…
Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring Is Associated With Reduced Physical Activity During Everyday Life
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to assess the impact on noninvasive ambulatory blood pressure monitoring on physical activity measured objectively by use of triaxial accelerometers. METHODS: Twenty-four working men and women performed ambulatory blood pressure plus activity monitoring for 1 working day and evening and activity monitoring alone for a separate day and evening. Blood pressure measures were taken at 20-minute intervals dur…
