  • The Texas City Disaster, 1947

    Hugh W Stephens•BOOK•Texas City Disaster 1947•1997

On April 16, 1947, a small fire broke out among bags of ammonium nitrate fertilizer in the hold of the ship Grandcamp as it lay docked at Texas City, Texas. Despite immediate attempts to extinguish the fire, it rapidly intensified until the Grandcamp exploded in a blast that caused massive loss of life and property. In the ensuing chaos, no one gave much thought to the ship in the next slip, the High Flyer. It exploded sixteen hours later. The st…

  • Maritime security in the United States

    Hugh W Stephens•ARTICLE•Terrorism and Political Violence•1990

Americans and their government are seemingly unconcerned about the possibility that maritime facilities and personnel might be at risk to armed violence. Not only are current maritime security efforts minimal, they feature a curious dichotomy: one thrust is directed toward occasional acts of terrorism, the other toward coastal defense in wartime. Despite a manifestly more interactive world marked by the ready availability of powerful, mobile weap…

  • The Parliamentary Parties and the Electoral Reforms of 1884-85 in Britain

    Open Access•Hugh W Stephens, D Brady et al.•ARTICLE•Legislative Studies Quarterly•1976•Cited by: 6•References: 4

This is a study of the effects of the 1884-85 electoral reforms in Britain on the constituency bases and voting patterns of parliamentary parties. A comparison of three aspects of constituency base (county or borough, urbanization, and region) shows that the rather sharp differences between the parties in the 1880-85 parliament largely disappeared in the parliament of 1886-92. Despite the fact that the parties in the second parliament represented…

  • Mobilization, Political Relevance, and Protest in an African State

    Hugh W Stephens•ARTICLE•Comparative Politics•1971

Despite the contemporary and historical importance of sudden eruptions of popular opposition to constituted governments in Africa, the subject remains largely untouched by the kind of systematic analysis which might alert us to the possibility of similar occurrences in the future. This article presents a paradigm of political relevance designed to improve our ability to anticipate such events by showing how shifts of persons into situations of po…
