Administering the Anglo-Breton Garrison at Brest, 1375-1377

When Second Best Might Be the Best
The novel coronavirus' high rate of asymptomatic transmission combined with a lack of testing kits call for a different approach to monitor its spread and severity. We proposed the use of hospitalizations and hospital utilization data to monitor the spread and severity. A proposed threshold of a declining 7-day moving average over a 14-day period, "7&14" was set to communicate when a wave of the novel coronavirus may have passed. The state of Ohi…

Anglo-Gascon Aquitaine
This volume contains ten papers from a 2011 conference marking the completion of the first stage of a recent major project to calendar the unpublished Gascon Rolls from 1317 to 1468, with an informative introduction on their significance and the long chequered history of previous attempts to edit them, together with a substantial bibliography of work on Anglo-Gascon Aquitaine, edited by Guilhem Pépin. First seriously exploited by Thomas Rymer in …

“I do Not Know in Scotland a Valley so Beautiful …”
In 1836, Samuel Laing (1780–1868) published his Journal of a Residence in Norway, an enquiry into Norway's moral and political economy. It is best known for idealizing Norwegian independent small-farm proprietors and their udal law of succession without primogeniture. During 16 months at Levanger and Verdal in Central Norway, his main concern was “the social condition and state of the Norwegian people”. However, like other contemporary European t…

Les nobles et la ville
Thanks to a strong historiographical tradition, rooted in the politics of pre-Revolutionary France, which saw medieval nobles living almost exclusively on their country estates rather than in towns (where a bourgeoisie encouraged by the Crown became dominant), there has been little attempt by recent French historians to investigate what part nobles played in municipal life as the medieval rural world was transformed into an early modern urban one…
Playing the indigenous card? The Shetland and Orkney Udal Law group and indigenous rights
The term ‘indigenous peoples’ generally refers to the original inhabitants of areas of the world colonized by Europeans. Relatively few ethnic minorities in Europe have been recognized as indigenous. A consequence of globalization is that knowledge of rights gained by indigenous groups in different parts of the world has led to explicit or implicit claims for indigenous status by organized groups within some European ethnic or regional minorities…
Multiple interfaces of the European Landscape Convention
The multiple interfaces of the European Landscape Convention were the topic of a roundtable panel discussion held at the meeting of the Permanent European Conference for the Study of the Rural Landscape in September 2006. The roundtable was convened by Kenneth R. Olwig, who together with four other speakers presented the main topics for discussion. Their presentations are given here as a series of short articles. Initially a brief historical back…

Usages of the “cultural landscape” concept in Norwegian and Nordic landscape administration
This paper summarizes the results of an analysis of differing usages of the concept of “cultural landscape” and related concepts in Norwegian and Nordic government policy and applied research documents. The analysis indicates how inconsistent or unclear use of concepts can hinder interdisciplinary and intersectorial communication. The role of rhetoric, the changing usage of concepts over time and different value loadings for similar concepts are …

DESIGN--A case series analysis was used to examine season and age in relation to SIDS and seasonal pattern and age at death distribution of perinatal risk factors. SETTING--The source population for the SIDS…
Social deprivation and patterns of consultation for respiratory symptoms
1increased asthma mortality, 2 and greater severity of asthmatic symptoms 3 have been observed in relation to social class and geographical deprivation. By contrast the prevalence of symptoms such as wheeze has not been consistently found to vary with social class. 3‐5 One explanation of these conflicting observations is that people from deprived backgrounds with respiratory symptoms may be less prone to seek or comply with health care. In the Un…

The Gallic Chronicle Restored
The last decade has seen renewed interest in late Roman Britain and its transition to Saxon England. There have been a number of attempts to clarify the chronology of events between the collapse of the central Roman administration and the establishment of a substantial and permanent Saxon presence. These attempts at chronological certainty have, of necessity, focused upon the entries in the so-called Gallic Chronicles since these sources are the …

The Early Christian Sites at Tell El-Amarna and Sheikh Said
Archaeological evidence is presented for settlements dating to the early Christian period at two sites of Pharaonic rock-cut tombs. The discussion is based on observations of remains visible at the sites today and the published reports of Davies, the only Egyptologist to have examined these sites in detail. Pottery types noted on the disturbed ground surface are used to suggest a chronological framework for the period of occupation. Contrasting a…
