K aren E. C arter . Scandal in the Parish: Priests and Parishioners Behaving Badly in Eighteenth-Century France
Historians have long recognized the crucial role of religious conflict in the French Revolution, though they continue to debate its nature and origins. Some of them may have fallen into the teleological trap of reading the conflict back into the Old Regime preconditions, but it is rather an oversimplification to characterize the current historiography as a focus on “the buildup of anticlericalism leading to the burst of rapid dechristianization” …

Peasants and Debt in Eighteenth-Century Champagne
Recent scholarship about debt in early-modern Europe has replaced an old model of misery and exploitation with a new paradigm that emphasizes the entrepreneurial rationale for going into debt. Reassessment of these arguments on the basis of detailed information about 5,000 rural households in France finds that debt posed a high risk of ruin to nearly half of the region's debtors and that viticulture played a unique role in stimulating a borrowing…
Taverns in the Public Sphere in 18th-Century Paris
The 18th-century Parisian tavern was public space that lay beyond the private spheres of home, family, or corporate identity. Taverns, like markets or roads, were without inherent order, so they required the ordering of public authority. For much of the old regime, taverns illustrate the public sphere in its subjection to public control. A second public sphere, found in the coffeehouses of Britain and the cafés of France, was a place of intellect…
