Can transparency and accountability programs improve health? Experimental evidence from Indonesia and Tanzania
We assess the impact of a transparency and accountability program designed to improve maternal and newborn health (MNH) outcomes in Indonesia and Tanzania. Co-designed with local partner organizations to be community-led and non-prescriptive, the program sought to encourage community participation to address local barriers in access to high quality care for pregnant women and infants. We evaluate the impact of this program through randomized cont…

Peer Effects and Alcohol Use among College Students
This paper examines the extent to which college students who drink alcohol influence their peers. We exploit a natural experiment in which students at a large state university were randomly assigned roommates through a lottery system. We find that on average, males assigned to roommates who reported drinking in the year prior to entering college had a Grade Point Average (GPA) one quarter-point lower than those assigned to nondrinking roommates. …
Empathy or Antipathy? The Impact of Diversity
Mixing across racial and ethnic lines could spur understanding or inflame tensions between groups. We find that white students at a large state university randomly assigned African American roommates in their first year were more likely to endorse affirmative action and view a diverse student body as essential for a high-quality education. They were also more likely to say they have more personal contact with, and interact more comfortably with, …

Nonexperimental Versus Experimental Estimates of Earnings Impacts
To assess nonexperimental (NX) evaluation methods in the context of welfare, job training, and employment services programs, the authors reexamined the results of twelve case studies intended to replicate impact estimates from an experimental evaluation by using NX methods. They found that the NX methods sometimes came close to replicating experimentally derived results but often produced estimates that differed by policy-relevant margins, which …
Covariance Structure Models for Fixed and Random Effects
Fixed- and random-effects models are often used to control for unmeasured personspecific effects when examining the influence of measured covariates on an outcome. To date, different estimators are used for fixed- and random-effects models, making it difficult to choose between these two alternatives. In this article, the authors outline a covariance-structure model that captures both fixed and random effects and provides a simple test for compar…
