Daewoo, Thomson, and Privatization in Late-Twentieth-Century France
The region of Lorraine in France witnessed the collapse of the steel industries in the late twentieth century, causing massive job losses and social devastation. Daewoo Electronics, a division of one of the great Korean conglomerates of the 1980s and 1990s, came to Lorraine in eastern France in 1987. It was lured there by generous French government subsidies and the chance to enter the European market. It opened three factories in consumer electr…
Taxis v. Uber in Paris: Technology, capital, and the sharing economy
Uber came to Paris late in 2011, bringing with them a widely accepted narrative of their necessary 'disruption' of a stagnant taxi industry. They presented themselves as part of the 'Sharing Economy,' with 'driver/partners' rather than employees, taking a share of the profits of each trip but acknowledging no obligations beyond the use of their app. Uber broke French law, evaded taxes, and engaged in unfair competitive practices. Uber is one exam…

The Escape to Vincennes: Public Narratives and Political Meanings in the Ex-Ministers' Trial of 1830
The trial of the ministers of Charles X (December 15–21, 1830) was the last important event in the revolutionary year of 1830 and a defining moment for the regime: contemporaries feared that it might result in a renewal of the revolution and a new Terror. This essay makes three major arguments. First, the governing classes, both left and right, united in the goal of saving the lives of the ministers. Second, the trial split the parliamentary and …

Gender, Class, and Madness in Nineteenth-Century France
She almost never left her cell, and usually stayed lying down. When she did go out, she would be naked, or wearing a chemise. She would take only a few steps, and generally she would walk on all fours, stretching her body out on the ground; with staring eyes, she would pick up any morsels which she found on the floor and eat them. . . . She drank water from the gutters, while the courtyards were being cleaned, although this water was polluted and…
Syphilis, Wives, and Physicians: Medical Ethics and the Family in Late Nineteenth-Century France
The history of venereal disease and its treatment in late nineteenthand early twentieth-century France presents a rather extraordinary paradox. This period was a time of increasing concern about sexually transmitted diseases, as well as a recognition of their diffusion into all levels of society. It brought a new understanding of the extent to which syphilis could reach down into the next generation, destroying fetuses in the womb or condemning s…
