Acasi Gender-of-Interviewer Voice Effects on Reports to Questions about Sensitive * Behaviors Among Young Adults
Although previous research indicates that audio computer-assisted self-interviewing (ACASI) yields higher reports of threatening behaviors than interviewer-administered interviews, very few studies have examined the potential effect of the gender of the ACASI voice on survey reports. Because the voice in ACASI necessarily has a gender, it is important to understand whether using a voice that is perceived as male or female might further enhance th…

Garten der Musen und Grazien: Mensch und Natur im niederlandischen Humanistengarten, 1522-1655
This study is essentially a thorough discussion of the idea of the garden in humanist, and especially neo-stoic, thought in the Netherlands in the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, based on a detailed examination of a number of key contributions to the theme. The focus in the first part of the book is on a meticulous explication of this theme in dialogues by Erasmus and Lipsius, with particular emphasis on the classical sources of their …
The Dutch Republic in the Seventeenth Century: The Golden Age
This lively and readable interpretation of the Dutch Golden Age was first published in Dutch in 2002. For this edition the text has been modified to make it more accessible to non-Dutch readers, and a valuable extra chapter on science and philosophy has been added. The original Dutch title was the rather less plain Golden Century accompanied by a distinctly more intriguing subtitle—the Enigma of the Republic. In the present edition the latter phr…

The First Modern Society? The Dutch Republic in the Seventeenth Century
The rapid economic growth and change in the sixteenth and, especially, the early seventeenth century produced a society in the Dutch Republic which had markedly modem characteristics, including a very high level of urbanisation and the transformation of society in the countryside as a result of the thorough integration of the rural sector into the market economy. However, these changes did not affect the whole of the Republic to the same extent: …

Repeated screening for breast cancer
In a screening service for breast cancer the results of routine repeat tests of women will contribute more than the results of their initial tests. A comparison of first and subsequent screens in a group of high risk women suggests that the sensitivity of screening declines between first and subsequent visits, whereas its specificity improves. Despite improved specificity, the ratio of benign biopsies to cancer was worse at repeated screening (21…
