The rapid economic growth and change in the sixteenth and, especially, the early seventeenth century produced a society in the Dutch Republic which had markedly modem characteristics, including a very high level of urbanisation and the transformation of society in the countryside as a result of the thorough integration of the rural sector into the market economy. However, these changes did not affect the whole of the Republic to the same extent: the new society can be seen most clearly in the maritime region and was more fully developed in Holland, while the society of the land provinces remained distinctly more traditional in structure. There were, also, uncertainties and ambivalences evident in the cultural response to the emergence of this new form of society
