    Open Access•Jorge Correia•ARTICLE•Annales islamologiques•2021

  • Building and performing

Jorge Correia, André Teixeira et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of North African…•2014•Cited by: 1•References: 1

Azammūr was the last great Portuguese conquest in North Africa (1513–42). On the one hand, it represented the last stage of a broader strategy of establishment in Morocco still fired by crusade ideology. Christian Azammūr proposed a new urban space, which was celebrated by contemporary Portuguese narratives. Beyond technological, urban and military innovations, the Portuguese presence in Azammūr was affirmed through a symbolic rhetoric that would…

    Open Access•Jorge Correia•CHAPTER•Urban Identity and the Atlantic…•2013

The history of the Portuguese city of Mazagão is also the history of a journey over the Atlantic. Figuratively speaking, this chapter is structured as a ship’s voyage from the northwestern shore of Africa to the Amazon basin rain forest to follow the Portuguese contribution to the urban design and public space from the sixteenth to the eighteenth centuries along the coasts and islands of the Atlantic Ocean. Established as a castle in 1514 and con…

  • Clash of Power and Creed

    Jorge Correia•CHAPTER•Foundation, Dedication and…•2012

This chapter focuses on the effective clashes of power that a European Christian kingdom imposed over a Muslim region. It demonstrates that the (re)foundation of cities as part of the Portuguese realm implied religious, social and military processes. Ceremonies, such as consecration masses or cavalry investitures, occurred together with the physical transformation of the city. '(Re)foundation' involved symbolical behaviour in line with the (re)de…
