Gauging Goodness of Fit: Teachers’ Responses to Their Instructional Teams in High-Poverty Schools
Teacher teams are increasingly common in urban schools. In this study, we analyze teachers’ responses to teams in six high-poverty schools. Teachers used two criteria to assess teams’ goodness of fit in meeting the demands of their work: whether their teams helped them teach better and whether the team contributed to a better school. Their responses differed notably by school, depending largely on the principal’s approach to implementation. In th…
Selecting the Best Items for a Short-Form of the Experiences in Close Relationships Questionnaire
Five studies were conducted to develop a short form of the Experiences in Close Relationships (ECR) questionnaire with optimal psychometric properties. Study 1 involved Item Response Theory (IRT) analyses of the responses of 2,066 adults, resulting in a 12-item form of the ECR containing the most discriminating items. The psychometric properties of the ECR-12 were further demonstrated in two longitudinal studies of community samples of couples (S…
Teacher Turnover in High-Poverty Schools: What We Know and Can Do
Background/Context Over the past three decades, teacher turnover has increased substantially in U.S. public schools, especially in those serving large portions of low-income students of color. Teachers who choose to leave high-poverty schools serving large numbers of students of color usually transfer to schools serving wealthier, Whiter student populations. Some researchers have interpreted this trend to mean that “teachers systematically favor …
Will Vams Reinforce the Walls of the Egg-Crate School
Throughout the United States there is an increasing trend toward using value-added methods (VAMs) for high-stakes decisions. When policymakers use VAMs to identify, reward, and dismiss teachers, they may perpetuate the egg-crate model of schooling and undermine efforts to build instructional capacity schoolwide. At any time, in any school, some teachers are more knowledgeable, experienced, and skilled than others. Schools function best when they …
How Context Matters in High-Need Schools: The Effects of Teachers’ Working Conditions on Their Professional Satisfaction and Their Students’ Achievement
Background/Context Educational policy makers have begun to recognize the challenges posed by teacher turnover. Schools and students pay a price when new teachers leave the profession after only 2 or 3 years, just when they have acquired valuable teaching experience. Persistent turnover also disrupts efforts to build a strong organizational culture and to sustain coordinated instructional programs throughout the school. Retaining effective teacher…
Leading the Local: Teachers Union Presidents Chart Their Own Course
Teachers unions are among the most powerful, yet least studied, actors in public education today. Although public attention focuses on the influence of national unions, the policies that most affect teachers and schooling are bargained by local unions and school boards. Interviews with 30 recently elected local union presidents reveal that these leaders balance competing interests and obligations, from the concerns and priorities of their members…

Diversity policy in higher education: The impact of college students' exposure to diversity on cultural awareness and political participation
The current policy environment regarding affirmative action and diversity mandates in higher education makes it necessary to analyse the impact of exposure to diversity on the goals of higher education, including greater cultural awareness and the promotion of democratic citizenship. This essay discusses the findings of a study conducted at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater - a regional, state university located in southeast Wisconsin enroll…

Luther's Reformation and (Un)Holy Matrimony
How dramatic was Martin Luther's impact on the Reformation family? By moving away from a history of politics and theology to the beliefs and practices of common people, scholars drawing from many disciplines paint portraits of Reformation families that differ little from those that preceded and followed them. Available information on household climate, the divorce rate, the social role of women, child-rearing practices, and education lead one to …

Sexual Intimacy and Replacement Children after the Death of a Child
The stress on couples who have a child die is tremendous. Fourteen couples who had a short or long preparation time for their child's death were interviewed. All parents expressed guilt. It was also discovered that because of this grief and the accompanying guilt, sexual intercourse was performed only by three couples within the first three days after the death, with sexual guilt occurring with one couple. Hugging and being held, however, became …
