Leveraging Change
This study examines the role of agents of change (AoCs) in promoting environmentally sustainable land management in Aotearoa New Zealand's (AoNZ's) agricultural system. Survey responses from 196 individuals across five organisational types highlighted significant sustainability challenges in nine agricultural sectors. Dairy was perceived as the least sustainable; mixed farming as the most sustainable, albeit still facing moderate environmental ch…
Why Did They Not Borrow? Debt‐Averse Farmers In Rural Vietnam
Nonborrowers are defined as debt averse if they have never borrowed in the past and prefer avoiding debt in the future, even when offered generous borrowing terms such as zero interest rates, zero collateral, and easy debt‐forgiveness. Other nonborrower types have either borrowed in the past or are open to doing so in the future. To better understand nonborrowing behavior, credit preference types (CPTs) were measured among 575 low‐income farmers …
News coverage of Confucius Institutes in the pre-Trump era
A novel dataset is presented that reveals a general pattern of declining favourability in news stories about Confucius Institutes (CIs) from 2006 through 2015 in six English-speaking countries: the US, the UK, Canada, Australia, India and Kenya. There are significant differences in mean favourability and time trends across countries, however. Decreasing trends in favourability are observed in the US and Canada, in particular, whereas Kenya and In…

Quantity Restrictions with Imperfect Enforcement in an Overused Commons
This paper presents a model of quantity regulation as a policy variable when regulation enforcement is imperfect. The model provides a counterintuitive result: that equilibrium congestion can become worse as the quantity restriction becomes more severe. Intuitively, stricter regulation makes the detection probability lower due to the crowding effect, which makes agents more likely to violate the regulation. The effect of the regulation standard i…

Measuring the Effect of Sexual Orientation on Income
The effect of nonheterosexuality on individual income is estimated using 1991–1996 General Social Survey data. Other researchers have concluded that homosexuals earn less than similarly qualified workers, in contrast to the popular perception that homosexuals are more affluent than nonhomosexuals. Using improved statistical techniques, this article finds noticeable earnings effects that go in opposite directions across genders. Nonheterosexual me…
