Comparison of an integrated versus stand-alone approach to post-validation surveillance for lymphatic filariasis in Niue
Background: Lymphatic filariasis (LF) is a mosquito-borne parasitic disease caused by three species of filarial worm: Wuchereria bancrofti, Brugia malayi and B. timori. The early stages of infection are often asymptomatic; yet, chronic infection may result in lymphoedema, elephantiasis, and hydrocele, imposing significant social and economic burdens. Global initiatives have dramatically reduced prevalence and transmission, and Niue, a self-govern…

Producing Agreements and Innovations in Collaborative Governance
Collaborative governance initiatives often seek innovative solutions to longstanding policy dilemmas, as well as agreements on those solutions among longtime political adversaries. Producing both innovations and agreements in combination is difficult: the diversity among collaborators that enable innovations can complicate their attempts to reach agreements, while unifying factors that support agreements may diminish the prospects for innovation.…
Imprisoned in marital bliss
Composed during Aleksandr Pushkin’s first Boldino Autumn, the most productive literary period of the poet’s career, “Mistress into Maid” and “The Blizzard” treat the issues of love and marriage, which were at the forefront of his consciousness. This article considers why Pushkin reframed his Tatiana and Eugene in two comic, quasi-sentimental adventure stories at the very time when he was preparing for his upcoming wedding. Through close reading o…
The Republic of Venice
The European Fortune of the Roman Veronica in the Middle Ages
The Empress Undressed
This study uses close reading of clothing imagery to unlock a system by which Pushkin was able to enshroud his political messages in layers of apparel and textual patterning that would have been accessible to his peers. Despite Pushkin's profound “genre consciousness,” commonalities across texts suggest that each item of apparel carries a particular semiotic “charge,” which acts similarly to repeating lexical items or rhyming patterns. Though dre…
Preserving the fabric of the national family
Dress plays a key role within Pushkin’s historical novel, The Captain’s Daughter , and a number of studies have focussed on the significance of Peter Grinev’s gift of a hare-skin coat to the rebel Pugachev. This article departs from these previous studies by examining dress as a context-specific cultural sign, which forms a visual language understood by characters in the novel. Characters use cultural codes associated with traditional dress, incl…
Corpus Analysis of European Union Documents
In linguistic terms, the European Union is a unique entity that boasts 23 official languages. Its institutions constantly generate texts in all languages, which is fertile ground for corpus linguists seeking large quantities of naturally occurring language. The overview presented here briefly considers the nature of these texts, the type of corpus‐based research that has been accomplished or is underway, and hypothesizes about future applications…
