Sholem Aleichem’s Bleter: Reading as national formation in “Dreyfus in Kasrilevke”
Supply Chain Linkages and the Extended Carbon Coalition
Which firms oppose action to fight climate change? Networks of input sourcing and sales to downstream customers ought to propagate and reinforce opposition to decarbonization beyond direct emitters of CO2. To test this claim, we build the largest data set of public political activity for and against climate action in the United States, revealing that the majority of corporate opposition to climate action comes from outside the highest‐emitting in…

The President the US Needs Next
A New Bottom Line in American society should be the primary focus of America's next president. Institutions (including corporations and governments), social practices, and even personal actions should be judged rational, efficient and productive not only to the extent that they maximize money and power, but also to the extent that they maximize love and caring, ethical and ecological sensitivity and behavior, kindness and generosity, non-violence…
Values and Beliefs of Psychedelic Drug Users: A Cross-Cultural Study
Psychedelic drugs such as LSD and psilocybin are often claimed to be capable of inducing life-changing experiences described as mystical or transcendental, especially if high doses are taken. The present study examined possible enduring effects of such experiences by comparing users of psychedelic drugs (n = 88), users of nonpsychedelic illegal drugs (e.g., marijuana, amphetamines) (n = 29) and non illicit drug-using social drinkers (n = 66) on q…

Amelioration of infant sleep disturbances: II. Effects of scheduled awakenings by compliant parents
Twelve infants and toddlers who exhibited spontaneous awakening and crying episodes during the night were subjected to scheduled awakenings by their parents. Scheduled awakenings were determined from individual baseline data, and these consisted of awakening, feeding, and consoling the child about 15 to 30 minutes before typical spontaneous awakening times. Once spontaneous awakenings were precluded, scheduled awakenings by the parents were faded…

Calibrating the Clocks: A Response to “Old and New Research Designs for Studying the World-System: A Research Note
The article by Chase-Dunn, Pallas, and Kentor (1982) presents a critique of previously used research designs and two “new” multilevel designs for testing propositions about the world-system. Recognizing that world-system analysis presents researchers with methodological conundrums such as the degrees of freedom problem, we welcome attempts to adapt designs or create new ones that can enable tests of research hypotheses derived from theories of th…

The Philosophical Relevance of “The Ruling Class”
Campus Characteristics and Campus Unrest
The political and public controversy surround ing campus unrest has led to the widespread endorsement by politicians and many members of the general public of five propositions: 1. Campus protests are typically violent; 2. campus discipline is too permissive (or repressive); (3) higher education indoctrinates its students; 4. American campuses have been politicized; 5. student discontent with higher edu cation causes unrest. Examination of the by…

Anarchism and the American Counter-Culture
NINE YEARS AGO GEORGE WOOD SURVEYED THE ‘GHOST OF THE historical anarchist movement’ and concluded that there was ‘no reasonable likelihood of a renaissance’. History showed that ‘the movements which fail to take the chances it offers them are never born again’. Seven years later, when identifiably anarchist tendencies re-emerged in the youth movements in England and Holland, Woodcock wondered ‘whether I had been rash in so officiously burying th…
