Beyond the Verdict
This article examines one of thousands of reports describing murder trials that are stored in the archives of the Habsburg ruler in Vienna. The monarch was required to evaluate every civilian death sentence in his realm, including the Kingdom of Hungary, and he alone could decide if the execution should proceed or be commuted. But it was the relevant justice minister who composed the reports and framed the decision for the monarch. Through these …
István Deák’s Caste Honor
István Deák was an expert on the Habsburg officer corps and argued convincingly that the defense of honor was central to its self-understanding. Deák confronts contradictory evidence about the extent of antisemitism in the Austro-Hungarian officer corps as well as the question of whether or not Jewish officers were treated by their peers as men with honor. Because of his immense erudition, Deák was able to approach these questions with a sensitiv…
Alys X. George. The Naked Truth
“A golden thread,” Alys George explains in this beautiful and evocative book, runs “throughout the cultural production of Viennese modernism.” It is the impulse (quoting art historian Werner Hofmann) “to recognize the flesh” (5), to appreciate and to study the materiality of human being. As its title suggests, The Naked Truth lays bare the importance of the body to culture, society, science, and politics in Vienna from the 1880s to the 1930s. Rea…
Europe without Borders
In 2012 the historian Julia Adeney Thomas restrained her temper but unleashed a warning. The occasion was a forum in the American Historical Review on ‘historiographic “turns” in critical perspective’. The perspectives offered were critical enough, Thomas wrote in praise of the other authors, but the forum had a blind spot: ‘alongside the turns analyzed here, a world-altering force has been emerging, one larger, more devastating, and more definit…
Deborah R. Coen. Climate in Motion
Environmental historian Julia Adeney Thomas recently sent me an essay about history in the Anthropocene, in which she muses, “Perhaps the Anthropocene’s greatest challenge to historical practice is that it doesn’t provide enough uncertainty to give us hope.” Deborah R. Coen, whose first book was on the subject of uncertainty itself (Vienna in the Age of Uncertainty: Science, Liberalism, and Private Life [2007]), provides in Climate in Motion: Sci…
