Reading by Example
"Long regarded as a sycophantic producer of overblown moral platitudes, Valerius Maximus emerges from a series of studies as an independent thinker capable of challenging his readers through the material he has collected: he makes them think about real moral dilemmas and grants to non-Roman societies a remarkable equivalence to Rome. Through his silences as much as his sermons he decodes the value- and political-system of his day. Valerius is tal…
Commenting on Valerius Maximus (on J. Briscoe, Valerius Maximus, ‘Facta et Dicta Memorabilia’, Book 8
Exemplary Biography
Moving away from the nineteenth century’s concern with Quellenforschung , serious study of Valerius Maximus’ Facta et dicta memorabilia in the twentieth century produced a variety of different approaches to this Tiberian text of exemplary tales. One of the most interesting projects in this regard was produced by T.F. Carney, who scrutinised a key exemplar, Gaius Marius, across the work. In constructing a ‘biography’ from the exempla themselves, C…
Classical Dialogue
The contemporary Afrikaans poet Charl-Pierre Naudé is one of the most promising voices in South African poetry today. Following two award-winning Afrikaans collections, Naudé s debut collection in English, Against the Light (2007), demonstrates learned intertexual references to classical literature, particularly the Roman poets Horace and Catullus. These Latin poets become competing models for Naudé’s own poetics, either passionate and personal, …
Dracontius ( Ld 3.279–95) and the Source of the Thermopylae Nyktomachia
The account of the Battle of Thermopylae found in Diodorus Siculus (11.8.4–10.4) is remarkably different from the more commonly known Herodotean version of events (7.201–33). Most strikingly, his account includes details of a night raid on the Persian camp made by Leonidas and his men. Diodorus’ principal source for this section of the narrative, historians generally agree, was Ephorus of Cyme ( c . 405–330 b.c. ). This tradition was later taken …
Homer the South African
When reviewing a much-translated canonical text such as Homer's Iliad , it has become something of a topos to question the need for yet another translation of it. In the twenty-first century alone, Homer's Iliad has benefited from at least six published English translations already: Rodney Merrill (2007), Herbert Jordan (2008), Anthony Verity (2011), Stephen Mitchell (2011), Edward McCrorie (2012) and James Muirden (2012). Richard Whitaker adds h…
High Dosage Folic Acid Supplementation, Oral Cleft Recurrence and Fetal Growth
The study is the first double-blinded randomized clinical trial (RCT) to study the effect of high dosage folic acid supplementation on isolated oral cleft recurrence. The recurrence rates were similar between the two folic acid groups. However, the results are suggestive of a decrease in oral cleft recurrence compared to the historic recurrence rate. A RCT is still needed to identify the effect of folic acid on oral cleft recurrence given these s…
The Jennie Wade House Museum
No other Civil War battlefield, or perhaps any historic site in America, is as commercialized, iconized, and marketed as Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. In Gettysburg: Memory, Market, and an American Shrine (2003), the historian Jim Weeks explores the ways Gettysburg has been sold and consumed, declaring a Gettysburg visit to be “themed entertainment” and comparing the battlefield to the tourist traps of Gatlinburg, Tennessee, and Niagara Falls (p. 172…
