Artaud et l’expérience des langues
After taking part in an art therapy experiment in 1943, Antonin Artaud started to include in his writings passages of an invented language that he connected to the tradition of glossolalia. I argue that the polyglottic dimension of this glossolalic practice is essential. After expounding the relationship of glossolalia to linguistic diversity, I will demonstrate how Artaud’s glossolalia conveys the poet’s linguistic experience. More specifically,…
Performing rock art
At the end of the twentieth century, after the discovery of the Chauvet cave, Jean Clottes and David Lewis-Williams, drawing on the latter's ethnographic fieldwork and neuroscientific study of trance states, jointly propounded a new shamanistic interpretation of Palaeolithic cave art. This approach, which belongs to a tradition of magical-religious exegesis of such art, stirred a heated controversy, which cast it as heterodox. Nevertheless, the s…
Antonin Artaud et la traversée du miroir
Glossolalia, parts of an invented language that Antonin Artaud begins to include in his writings after 1943, are closely connected in their inception to his translation into French of Lewis Carroll’s Through the Looking-Glass . During this experience of translation, the mirroring situation of the art-therapy process in which Artaud is participating, allows him to oppose psychiatric practice and to challenge the definition of the subject that it t…

Artaud’s Plague Theatre
In the context of the Covid-19 pandemic, I intend to reread “The Theatre and the Plague,” one of Antonin Artaud’s most famous essays on theatre included in The Theatre and Its Double. In this manifesto, Artaud started sketching out his new vision for theatre, the Theatre of Cruelty, which he would begin experimenting with in the mid-1930s but would only later fully put into practice after World War II and his return to Paris in the late 1940s. In…
"Performing "Aume
In his last notebooks, Antonin Artaud made it clear that he was planning to stage a play on the Tower of Babel. The drafts for what this essay considers as a radio play helps to understand Artaud's preparatory work for his last radio play, To Have Done with the Judgment of God, and more generally provides insight into Artaud's writing technique, his practice of performance, and his interest in the radio medium. The essay argues that these drafts …
Antonin Artaud et la « surréa-liste »
In the article “Antonin Artaud et la surréa-liste,” the author studies in two unpublished texts Artaud's use of the list and its link to the Surrealist writing techniques. Through the détournement of psychiatric discourse, the “surrea-list” enables the poet to develop an alternative conception of the body contesting the practice of anatomy. Keywords: Antonin ArtaudSurrealismPsychiatryPsychoanalysisPoetry Notes1 Abrégé O.2 Je tiens à remercier la F…
