A crosslinguistic study of conditions on argument indexing
This paper presents a systematic study of conditional argument indexing in 83 genealogically diverse languages. ‘Indexing’ means a form of marking (affixal, clitic, or non-linear) on a verb that expresses one or more features (person, number, gender/noun class) of an argument. ‘Conditional argument indexing’ is when a particular argument is not indexed (or indexed differently) under certain conditions. We study all three (in)transitive core argum…
Music Matters
News headlines over the last few years confirm a grim reality for music in higher education: “Oxford Brookes University to Close Music Department”; “Jacksonville University Cuts Music and Theatre Programs and Lays off 40 Faculty Members”; “McNally Smith College of Music Closing Due to Lack of Funds.” In insecure times, institutions of higher learning tend to double down on programs and departments that are most attractive to prospective students.…

Magic of the Mundane
The Renaissance stage repeatedly presents magic not only in demonic conjurations, spiritual presences, or a host of supernatural agents but also through exposing supernatural expertise as fraudulent practice. As this essay argues, lifting the veil on spectacular magic was just as intellectually compelling to authors like Thomas Middleton or Ben Jonson as was the act of conjuring a truly occult environment out of thin air. The article shows that t…
Differential indexing in Kamang
In Kamang (Alor-Pantar, Indonesia), some verbs alternate between indexing the S or P argument with a prefix (from several different series) and occurring unprefixed; that is, Kamang has differential argument indexing. Through a qualitative study of a spoken-language corpus, this paper investigates the alternation between one of the prefix series and zero-marking. Previously described as indicating increased patientivity on intransitive motion and…
Argument indexing in Kamang
Kamang (Alor-Pantar, non-Austronesian/Papuan) has a typologically unusual system of argument indexing, in which the S or P argument can be indexed on the verb by one of several prefix paradigms. Some verbs always show indexing, while others exhibit differential argument indexing (DAI). In DAI, the use of a particular prefix paradigm or zero marking depends on different (combinations of) factors. We investigate the effects of argument role (S, P),…
Introduction to Lexical constraints in grammar
This is an introduction to the Special Issue Lexical constraints in grammar: Minority verb classes and restricted alternations. In many languages, grammatical relations are subject to lexical constraints. These constraints can be manifested in different morphosyntactic domains, for instance, through deviation from canonical case frames or different argument indexation patterns. Other constructions that have been studied through this lens are voic…

Unlocking Luhmann
Luhmann's theory is fascinating and complex. It offers incomparably enlightening insights, references and research opportunities, but reveals its utility only after a quite high competence threshold. Using the reticular form of the glossary, this book makes the theory accessible while maintaining its complexity. Without being obstructed by knowledge gaps or by references to concepts presented elsewhere, readers inside and outside sociology get th…

Shakespeare and the Magic of Mummy
I argue in this article for a reconsideration of Shakespeare's play in light of the phenomena of eating mummified flesh in early modern medicinal practice. At various junctures in Julius Caesar, characters imagine consuming Caesar's sanctified flesh as an act of revenge, dissolution, or medical regimen. As this article shows, however, such an act is never empirically neutral. Rather, Shakespeare's drama explores the intractable animus that inhere…

Cut, Carved, and Served
This essay examines the role of competition in both private and publicly‐staged jam sessions of the 1930s and 1940s. The historiographic materials and methods of inquiry into this fraught period in American history present challenges for the modern scholar of the jam session. First and foremost, this history must be scrupulously contextualized. The literature on midcentury jam sessions is filled with overstated images of primitive, aggressive, ma…

Buried in the unremissive ground
Like the forgotten memories of seminal events that purportedly lurk in the mind's subconscious, the buried substrata of a city can contain unresolved pasts, forgotten incidents that have shaped the present. And like memories, these buried artifacts can be painful once unearthed. Using Richmond, Virginia as a case, this article explores how the public reaction to a city's buried past serves as a map to the social worth of its citizens. Modern reac…
