In response to the unprecedented refugee crisis around the world, a growing body of research has focused on psychological distress among individuals and families forced to flee their homelands. Less attention has been directed toward understanding resilience, adaptation, and growth among this population. This grounded theory study explored the posttraumatic growth experiences of Middle Eastern and Afghan refugees resettled in the United States. T…

I Felt Close to Death”: A Phenomenological Study of Female Strangulation Survivors of Intimate Terrorism
This qualitative study focused on the lived experiences of female survivors of severe intimate partner violence that involved strangulation. Such domination manifests via power and control tactics, which include extremely violent behavior. Existing literature on domestic violence is extensive; however, previous researchers have not addressed the psychological complexities of strangulation survivors’ lived experiences, especially from a feminist p…
Embracing Our Eroticism: A Foucauldian Discourse Analysis of Women’s Eroticism
Women’s sexuality has been examined through political, religious, scientific, and social lenses. Despite advances, discourses driving sexual expression embody double standards, pathologizing, and silencing. Women’s own experiences are largely ignored in existing literatures. Foucauldian discourse analysis (FDA) is a qualitative methodology rooted in Foucault’s examinations of power and discourse construction. In this FDA, 111 women answered quest…
Writings of Lions: Narrative Inquiry of a Kenyan Couple Living in the U.S
In this study, we told the story of a Kenyan couple, B. and F., who has left Kenya and moved to Southern California. We followed a narrative inquiry framework, using Clandinin and Connelly’s (2000) guidelines. We delineated core components of narrative inquiry research, as well as related the journey of B. and F., who have created dual lives in both Kenya and the United States. As part of the interpretive analysis process, we integrated the first…

The purpose of this phenomenological study was to examine how therapists use prayer in the therapeutic process. Researchers recruited via a maximum variation sampling method 17 diverse participants in terms of race and faith, including Muslim, Buddhist, Jewish, Catholic, Protestant, and Latter-Day Saints. Results revealed seven themes across faiths: (a) definition of prayer; (b) prayer as connection with God/transcendent and with client; (c) ethi…

Points of Connection and Disconnection: A Look at Feminism and Postmodernism in Family Therapy
Throughout the family therapy field, feminism and postmodernism have intersected both theoretically and therapeutically. Both perspectives confront patriarchy and other oppressive attitudes in families and society. At the same time, feminism and postmodernism have points of disconnection. While a feminist stance actively targets inequalities related to gender and other minority groups, a postmodern paradigm emphasizes the relativity of personal t…

Allied Health Manpower Strategies: Estimates of the Potential Gains from Efficient Task Delegation
This study analyzes the potential impact of physician extenders on the productivity of primary care practices and considers the consequent implication for future health manpower requirements. A number of previous investigations have evaluated a variety of extenders in experimental settings. This study, in contrast, constructs and operates a simulation model of the representative practice permitting one to synthesize the experiences and insights o…
