  • Scandinavia enters Christian Europe

    Open Access•Birgit Sawyer, P H Sawyer et al.•CHAPTER•The Cambridge history of…•2003

It was not until the ninth century that significant numbers of Scandinavians were converted to Christianity, but some knowledge of Christian beliefs and rituals had reached Scandinavia much earlier. By the beginning of the ninth century the Franks had subjected and forcibly converted the Saxons south of the river Elbe. In 819, the Franks helped Harald to regain power in an uneasy partnership with Godfred's sons. This made it possible for Ebbo, ar…

  • The Viking-Age Rune-Stones: Custom and Commemoration in Early Medieval Scandinavia

    Birgit Sawyer•BOOK•The Viking-age rune-stones•2000

There are over 3000 runic inscriptions on stone made in Scandinavia in the late Viking Age. This book is the first attempt by a historian to study the material as a whole. Birgit Sawyer•ARTICLE•Norwegian Archaeological Review•1991•Cited by: 1

Social and economic changes caused by religious and political developments during the 10th and 11th centuries AD are behind most of the 2000 runic inscriptions on standing stones found in many parts of Scandinavia. These inscriptions made public and permanent claims to old or new rights to land, title, and power. The distribution of rune‐stones may reflect the degree of political and religious change in different areas; the main concentrations of…

  • The Christianization of Scandinavia

    G Quispel, Birgit Sawyer•ARTICLE•Vigiliae Christianae•1988

  • Valdemar, Absalon and Saxo: Historiography and Politics in Medieval Denmark
