Social and economic changes caused by religious and political developments during the 10th and 11th centuries AD are behind most of the 2000 runic inscriptions on standing stones found in many parts of Scandinavia. These inscriptions made public and permanent claims to old or new rights to land, title, and power. The distribution of rune‐stones may reflect the degree of political and religious change in different areas; the main concentrations of inscriptions occurring where change was greatest or most vigorously opposed
