Exploring the spiritual in the pedagogy of Friedrich Froebel
Friedrich Froebel (1782–1852) was the inventor of the kindergarten, and his emphasis on childcentredness and play influenced the progressive movement throughout the world. The concepts of unity and wholeness are highly visible in his writings. Religion is addressed in his work and that of his followers, but little attention has been paid to spirituality per se in Froebel’s thought. This paper explores the place of the spiritual in Froebel’s schem…
New perspectives on young children's moral education
Emotion, spiritual experience and education
This paper, informed especially by the work of the philosopher John Macmurray, focuses on two personal anecdotes in order to explore the relationship and distinctions between emotional and spiritual experience. Despite being unique to the individual, emotional experience requires relationship, and thus appreciation of the feelings of others is possible through empathy. Emotional development may be a pre-requisite for spiritual experience, and sha…

In defence of the concept of ‘spiritual education’
In a paper published in Volume 11, no. 2, of this journal, Roger Marples argued that the term ‘spiritual education’ is at most superfluous and at worst entirely meaningless. He suggested that the use of the term is unhelpful and will continue to be so unless and until we can identify some body of spiritual knowledge and understanding, linked to experience, which is distinct from, and in some sense ‘beyond’, those of moral, aesthetic and other for…

The Impact of a Decade of Educational Change on Pastoral Care and PSE
This paper reports an investigation via questionnaire into the changes in pastoral care and PSE since 1988 and the Reform Act. The author outlines the key changes since 1988 and constructs several hypotheses. These hypotheses predict that the effects on these two areas will have been negative. However, the results obtained from the survey were more positive than expected. Many respondents saw the changes as having increased the perceived importan…

Pupil Perspectives on Remedial Education
It is widely accepted that labelling and the development of deviant sub-cultures result where educational ‘failures’ are grouped together. This paper describes pupil perspectives on remedial provision in two English comprehensive schools where twenty-seven 13–16 years olds were interviewed in groups, and their attitudes to ability, learning difficulties, remedial teachers and the curriculum established. The simplistic view of the growth of ‘anti-…
