Actors of Community Development: Insider and Outsider Perspectives
The diverse socio-economic and geographical situation of Nepal contributes to the complexity of community development. In such varied contexts, holistic community development faces many challenges, addressing cross-cutting issues like health and education, which may be viewed differently by men and women, as well as different castes, ethnicities, economic status, political associations and religions. The community's well-being must be the central…
Bastard children’: Unacknowledged consulting companies in development cooperation
Development consulting companies are pivotal actors in bilateral projects, yet they are largely invisible in policy documents, and little researched. Their business model is a combination of ‘doing good’ and profit. This article examines the history, business logics and working relationships of consulting companies in development cooperation, taking the case of Finland. It asks ‘Why are consultancy companies needed in development cooperation?’ Th…

This study scrutinizes the institutional realities of water project implementation in remote, rural Nepal. It demonstrates that both sound institutional design and local bricolage capabilities are required for sustainable operation and maintenance of local institutions in the challenging operational environment. Institutional bricolage processes are best facilitated through providing locally legitimate, inspiring spaces to local agencies for cont…
Hidden from view: Canadian gestational surrogacy practices and outcomes, 2001-2012
This paper raises some troubling questions about the fertility treatments provided to Canadian gestational surrogates, women not genetically related to the child that they carry. Using information published between 2003 and 2012 by Canada's Assisted Reproduction Registry, the paper traces the growing incidence of births to gestational surrogates. The transfer of more than one embryo increases the chance of pregnancy and the incidence of multiple …
The Spectrum of Motivations, Experiences and Attitudes in Technical Development Cooperation
This article examines the motivations and experiences of persons working in different technical cooperation roles within international development cooperation, analysing how they differ, yet contain a common thread. The study consists of interviews and a questionnaire directed to volunteers, NGO staff, junior professional officers, technical advisors, researchers and donor staff – as well as personal reflections. I consider the literature on moti…
Measuring ethnicity: Is 'Canadian' an evolving indigenous category
Measuring ethnicity in any society is a challenge. Given world immigration patterns, many countries face a growing dilemma in determining the cultural antecedents of their populations. A further complication is the reality that such determination occurs within the political and nationalistic settings where ethnic-cultural groups may be potent forces in their own right. As societies mature and evolve, there is an increasing tendency for population…
