  • The Colonialist Connotations of the Term “German Language”

Open Access•H Rothe, Hansjörg Martin Rothe•ARTICLE•Advances in Literary Study•2020

Linguistically speaking, the family of West-Germanic languages contains English (Englisch/Engels), Hoch-Deutsch (Duits/German) and Nederlands (Dutch/Niederländisch). All of them have Germanic roots to a certain degree but each one differs a lot from the languages spoken by any German tribesman in Ancient Roman times. The list shows at once that the terms “Deutsch”, “Duits” and “Dutch” seem to be derived from the same root, while the attributes “h…

  • The Caucus as an Anthropological Topos

    Open Access•H Rothe•ARTICLE•Advances in Anthropology•2014

Certain historical events may be driven by anthropological topoi surfacing from layers below culture and society, once the structures of society and culture allow for that to happen. Difficulties in finding a suitable term to describe a historical event may hint at such a situation. The events in autumn 1989 in the German Democratic Republic, often referred to as “peaceful revolution”, are analyzed in this regard and it is argued that in essence …

  • Interpretation of Bootstrap Values in Phylogenetic Analysis

    Bernhard Wiesemüller, H Rothe•ARTICLE•Anthropologischer Anzeiger•2006

Bootstrap Analysis is a common tool in cladistics, and consequently many authors tend to believe that it could be close to a test of monophyly. In fact, it is only a procedure to calculate the redundancy of a certain character pattern among taxa. To demonstrate this, we set up a study with questionable data: Four skulls of great apes and humans were digitally photographed, and the pixels' brightness values were simply transformed to a one-zero-ma…

  • Q-Factor Analysis as a Tool for Phylogenetic Studies of Morphometric Data

    Bernhard Wiesemüller, H Rothe•ARTICLE•Anthropologischer Anzeiger•2006

The statistical procedure of Q-factor analysis was applied with the aim to detect complex morphological characters, which clearly separate taxonomic groups. Since Q-factor analysis, unlike cluster analysis, does not prescribe a hierarchical grouping, the results can be interpreted phylogenetically using an outgroup comparison. The essential steps of the approach are demonstrated by an empirical study on the phylogeny of Callitrichinae. Except for…

  • Statistical approaches to handle proportions as characters

    Bernhard Wiesemüller, H Rothe•ARTICLE•Anthropologischer Anzeiger•2006

The handling of morphometric proportions as characters in phylogenetics is methodically hardly elaborated. Common approaches are either to search for statistically significant differences in "index"-values, usually quotients of measures, or to compare regression lines for logarithmic values. The former have their weakness in an insufficient consideration of allometric proportions, the latter in a lack of appropriate methods for testing statistica…

  • The Size of Differences as a Quality Criterion for Characters in Phylogenetics.

    Bernhard Wiesemüller, H Rothe•ARTICLE•Zeitschrift für Morphologie und…•2001

One important aspect regarding the suitability of a character for phylogenetic reconstruction is the separability of compared groups with regard to different character states. Therefore, it is recommendable to standardize mean differences with respect to the dispersion of individual data.

  • Good characters and homology

Open Access•Bernhard Wiesem Ller, Bernhard Wiesemller et al.•ARTICLE•Evolutionary Anthropology Issues…•2000•References: 6

This paper is a critical comment on a recent article by Lieberman.1 We question his opinion that DNA is a better data source for phylogenetic reconstructions than bone and discuss his "problems and potential solutions" regarding the homology concept. We conclude that phylogenetic systematics requires a phylogenetic homology concept, and that Lieberman's "solutions," though useful terms, should not be designated as homology

  • The influence of abiotic factors on the onset and cessation of activity of semi‐free Callithrix jacchus

    Open Access•S Suchi, H Rothe•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•1999

The influence of abiotic environmental factors on the period of activity of a single group of South American common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus, Callitrichidae, Primates) was investigated under semi-free conditions. A group of eight members had a territory consisting of a heated wooden hut with a veranda, surrounded by an open area with a few trees (ca. 3.5 m high) and three runways made out of roofing slats, on which feeding places and sleepin…

For about 20 months the development of hand preferences in 21 experimentally naive common marmosets ( Callithrix jacchus ) was examined in 15 different tests. Test preferences were compared with their spontaneous behavior preferences in such contexts as feeding, grooming, play, and others. In the spontaneous use of the hands, only eight animals showed a significant lateral preference (2 left‐handed, 6 right‐handed). During the test period, howeve…

    Open Access•Andreas Koenig, H Rothe•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•1991

In a captive group of common marmosets ( Callithrix jacchus ), consisting of six group members and the three infants of the two breeding females, we analyzed participation of all group members in infant carrying, and suckling by the two breeding females. During the first two weeks of the infants' lives, the two breeding females carried their own infant(s) almost exclusively due primarily to the mutual avoidance by the two females. At the beginnin…

In a colony of captive marmoset monkeys ( Callithrix jacchus ), the survival rate of infants up to the age of 90 days after birth was analyzed with special reference to the number of members in the group. The number of group members (newborns excluded) varied between two (parents only) and 18 (parents plus non‐reproductive helpers); the number of adult group members varied between two and 15. Five hundred ninety‐two live‐born, parent‐reared infan…
