This paper examines the relationship between cultural beliefs about illness and psychological adjustment to a chronic disease. The findings of five studies were metaanalysed. In all these studies hospital patients suffering from various types of health problems were interviewed at different points in time and measures were used to assess their psychological adjustment. This study investigates cultural beliefs about physical disability prevalent in a rural community in India. An equal number of respondents (n = 32 each) of Allahabad district were drawn from families having a child with a disability and those having no member with a disability. The main objective of this study is to examine the explanatory models which Indian women use to understand their life threatening diseases. Two experiments were conducted for examining the effect of causal thinking on linkages between causal stability and expectations of success. In Experiment 1 (N = 60), causal thinking was manipulated by asking the subjects to rate four causes of success (or failure) on the anagram task either in each trial or only in the last trial.
