Coverage of skin cancer and recreational tanning in North American magazines before and after the landmark 2006 International Agency for Research on Cancer report
Despite a modest increase in volume of coverage post-IARC report, key messages from the report were not taken up by the media. While there have been some improvements in magazine reporting, there is a need for more effective dissemination of public health messages about skin cancer and tanning

Numeracy and Health Numeracy Among Chinese and Kenyan Immigrants to Canada
Mathematics self-efficacy plays an important role in the performance of quantitative tasks. The objective of this study was to examine the role of mathematics self-efficacy in numeracy and health numeracy among immigrants (60 Mandarin-speaking and 60 Kikuyu-speaking immigrants to Canada) for whom English was a second language (ESL). Two French Kit numeracy tasks (the addition, and the addition and subtraction correction tasks) constituted objecti…

In this article, we analyse coverage of the health effects of wind turbines in Ontario newspapers relative to the Green Energy Act using published risk communication fright factors. We selected five geographically discontinuous wind energy installations in Ontario and their surrounding communities b…
Application of the health literacy framework to diet-related cancer prevention conversations of older immigrant women to Canada
Health literacy, conceptualized as a framework involving basic (functional), interactive and critical skill sets, is a key determinant of health. Application of the health literacy framework (HLF) to immigrant populations has been limited. Our objective was to apply the HLF to discourses about diet-related colon cancer prevention among English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) immigrant women. We also explored whether these discussions could inform the …
Acculturation and Cancer Information Preferences of Spanish-Speaking Immigrant Women to Canada
To explore the cancer information preferences of immigrant women by their level of acculturation we conducted interviews with 34 Spanish-speaking English-as-a-second-language (ESL) women. Chi-square and Fisher's exact tests were used to look for differences by acculturation. Four themes were identified: What is prevention? What should I do; sources of my cancer information, strategies I use to better understand, and identifying and closing my hea…

Chat Room Computer-Mediated Support on Health Issues for Aboriginal Women
Within contemporary health care, increases in chronic disease have necessitated a disease management focus. Given that chronic disease is managed, more so than cured, there are increased demands for greater participation by health care consumers and they are expectated to take on increased responsibility for self-care. The emphasis on consumer responsibility has increased the significance of health-promoting behavior change in contending with con…

Cancer Coverage in Mass-circulating Canadian Women’s Magazines
Mass media can inform health beliefs and shape cancer control behaviours. This study surveyed cancer coverage in 309 issues of Canadian women's magazines for the period 1991-1997. Magazines were selected if 1996 revenue > $10 million and circulation > 500,000; Canadian Living, Chatelaine, Flare and Homemaker's met these criteria. The volume of cancer coverage varied significantly by year and by magazine. However, coverage of specific cancers did …
Malnutrition and immunological function with special reference to cell-mediated immunity
Malnutrition, and especially undernutrition, is the most common cause of acquired immune dysfunction worldwide. Establishing a cause-effect relationship among nutritional variables, immunological function, and disease susceptibility has proved to be difficult. In this review, the degree to which macronutrient and micronutrient deficiencies affect cell-mediated immunity and immunoregulation is discussed. The evidence for malnutrition-immune respon…
