The Auckland amateur astronomer Ronald A. McIntosh was New Zealand's premier meteor researcher from the mid-1920s through the mid-1940s and was a leading authority on Southern Hemisphere meteor showers. Using his own visual observations and those contributed by other members of the Meteor Section of the New Zealand Astronomical Society (later the Royal Astronomical Society of New Zealand) McIntosh was able to write a succession of research papers…

  • Intentionality and (Moral) Normativity

John J Drummond, John Drummond•CHAPTER•Normativity, Meaning, and the…•2019

This chapter provides an alternative to Crowell’s account of normativity and its ground in anticipatory resoluteness. The chapter argues that intentionality with its orientation toward truthfulness is a “primitive” or “basic” notion that is sufficient to disclose the realm of meaning and to account for the normativity we find in human experience. Intentionality—minding the world—has as its telos getting to the truth of the matter in all the domai…

  • The Mount Tarawera Volcanic Eruption in New Zealand and Māori Cometary Astronomy

Wayne Orchiston, John J Drummond et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Astronomical History…•2019

In The Astronomical Knowledge of the Maori , which was first published in 1922, the Dominion Ethnologist Elsdon Best mentions that the name Tiramaroa was applied to comets, and that Tiramaroa was seen about the time of the Tarawera eruption (which occurred on 10 June 1886), and also during the siege of Te Tapiri in 1865. In this paper we identify naked eye comets that were visible from New Zealand in 1865 and 1886, and examine other comets seen d…

  • Interpretative phenomenological analysis

Jan Pringle, John Drummond et al.•ARTICLE•Nurse Researcher•2011

AIM: The aim of this article is to examine the approach of interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) and to add to discussions regarding the contribution that the approach can make to healthcare research. BACKGROUND: Interpretative phenomenological analysis is an approach to qualitative, experiential research that has been gaining in momentum and popularity over the past 10-15 years. The approach has its roots in psychology and recognises th…

  • The cyclical process of action research

    Open Access•John Drummond, John S Drummond et al.•ARTICLE•Action Research•2007•Cited by: 14•References: 3

Action Research is normally described as both a cyclical process and a participatory (democratic/egalitarian) undertaking. This article does not seek to contest the idiosyncrasies and pragmatics of the cyclical process involved in action research. Rather, it seeks to enrich it by developing further the idea of action research as a process that engages with problems and learning in the act of creating change. To do this we draw primarily on aspect…

  • Care of the Self in a Knowledge Economy

    John Drummond•ARTICLE•Educational Philosophy and Theory•2003•Cited by: 11•References: 1

Perhaps it is time to place recent policy developments in nursing and, in particular, nurse education, in the wider context of what is now commonly referred to as a knowledge economy. Such a discourse now permeates government policy at all levels.2 The term ‘knowledge economy’ is, as one would expect, primarily a signal for strategists and policy-makers that it is time to take note of a fundamental shift in the role and treatment of knowledge in …

  • Nietzsche for nurses

    Open Access•John Drummond, John S Drummond•ARTICLE•Nursing Philosophy•2000

We hear much these days of lifelong learning and higher levels of nursing practice. We have even been introduced to the concept of the supernurse. This paper seeks to contribute an ethico‐political dimension to the largely performative uses of these terms in contemporary nursing politics. This is done by exploring the promise of certain elements of Nietzsche's philosophy for nursing. Certain major Nietzschean themes are outlined in the context of…
