  • Political Ceremonies and Rituals in the Early Modern World

C L Johnson, Jan Hennings et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Early Modern History•2025

Rituals display, legitimize, and sometimes question existing power relations in public settings. At the same time, recent research has shown that ceremonies and rituals help various actors and groups establish and re-establish their roles in social and political systems. Indeed, rituals construct new power relations rather than merely re-affirm previously existing ones. As such, they constitute new social realities and establish new social contra…

    Barbara Stollberg-Rilinger, Barbara Stollberg‐rilinger•BOOK•Das Heilige Römische Reich…•2018

  • An Empire For Our Times? A Discussion of Peter Wilson's The Holy Roman Empire: A Thousand Years of Europe's History

    Open Access•Peter R Wilson, Barbara Stollberg‐rilinger et al.•ARTICLE•Central European History•2017•Cited by: 1•References: 6

In the two centuries since its dissolution in 1806, the Holy Roman Empire has usually been viewed as an antiquated relic of the medieval past, a dysfunctional polity that hindered Germany's development into a modern, liberal nation-state. In the wake of its demise, a chorus of famous intellectuals and statesmen—including Voltaire, James Madison, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Leopold von Ranke, and Heinrich von Treitschke—derided the Empire as a “mo…

    Open Access•Barbara Stollberg-Rilinger, Barbara Stollberg‐rilinger•ARTICLE•Historische Anthropologie•2014•Cited by: 1

Scholarly literature of the Early Modern period often mentions that soldiers who had committed a collective crime, such as mutiny or desertion, had to toss a dice in order to decide whether they were to be executed or saved. The article asks to what extent such decision by lot really was a military practice. It begins by reconstructing the context of the theological and legal debates dealing with the general issue of decision by lot, traces the r…

    Barbara Stollberg-Rilinger, Barbara Stollberg‐rilinger•ARTICLE•Revue d’histoire moderne et…•2009•Cited by: 4
