  • Life projects

Vinicius Coscioni, Maria Paula Paixão et al.•ARTICLE•Philosophical Psychology•2025

This article introduces a comprehensive definition of life projects. It begins with a broad conception of a project as a process comprising the formation, enactment, and maintenance of intentional structures and actions. This definition represents the integration of two theoretical traditions that considered a project either as a process prior to action or a set of actions aimed at the same goals. Next, we differentiate life projects from other t…

Open Access•Çise Akün, Erkan Işık et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Career Development•2023

The present study examined the role of differentiation of self (DoS) in the career construction model of adaptation (CCMA) using a total sample of 243 married adults. In this article, we describe four types of dialogues that counselors may use to prompt narrative novelty and foster client change: (a) identify and evaluate the effects of innovative moments, (b) highlight contrasting self-positions, (c) ask about changes achieved, (d) promote a meta-perspective on change. Vignettes from a case…

    Mark L Savickas•OTHER•Career Development and Counseling•2020

This chapter begins by considering the self-constructing processes with which people make themselves into who they are in terms of cognitive schemas and performing strategies. It relates the actor's behavior, the agent's strivings, and the author's explanations to a discourse that delineates career construction counseling (CCC). The career construction theory (CCT) of self-making and career building highlights the mental processes that individual…

  • Life Design

    Open Access•Mark L Savickas•ARTICLE•Journal of Counseling & Development•2012

A new paradigm is implicit within the constructivist and narrative methods for career intervention that have emerged in the 21st century. This article makes that general pattern explicit by abstracting its key elements from the specific instances that substantiate the new conceptual model. The paradigm for life design interventions constructs career through small stories, reconstructs the stories into a life portrait, and coconstructs intentions …

Thomas Kuhn (1996), the historian of science, referred to a paradigm as a pattern of conceptual models and dominant practices that characterize a particular historical period. The present article traces the evolution and compares three major paradigms for career intervention, namely the formist paradigm of modernity’s vocational guidance for the actor, the organismic paradigm of high modernity’s career education for the agent, and the contextual …
