Community-led standards for global wastewater-based infectious disease surveillance
The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated global adoption of wastewater and environmental surveillance (WES) and revealed its value as a complement to case-based infectious disease monitoring. However, practical scientific, ethical, and legal standards for public health implementation remain limited. To address this gap, the Public Health Alliance for Genomic Epidemiology (PHA4GE) established a multidisciplinary international working group to develop com…
The PHA4GE Microbial Data-Sharing Accord
Microbial data sharing underlies evidence-based microbial research, as well as pathogen surveillance and analysis essential to public health. While the need for data sharing was highlighted during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, some concerns regarding secondary data use have also surfaced. Although general guidelines are available for data sharing, we note the absence of a set of established, universal, unambiguous and accessible principles to guide th…
Auge and Telephus
Heracles’ role as the father of Telephus involves significant elements for our understanding of the wider myth. The conception of Telephus is variously depicted as a “rape” or a “seduction” of Auge and starts a chain of events that portray Heracles as a caring father who rescues his abandoned child, providing a model for the Roman foundation myth. It also projects Heracles’ role in the First Trojan War into the Second. The story unfolds across se…
Equity in Access
This study explored the process and early outcomes of work undertaken by a program to increase Aboriginal people's awareness of, and access to, the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). This 'Access Program' was implemented through the Aboriginal Community Controlled Sector in the remote Kimberley region of Western Australia. Access Program staff were interviewed to explore the strengths, challenges, and future directions of the program. T…
Staging Issues
This chapter examines the arguments for the use of child actors on the fifth-century Athenian stage, and concludes that textual evidence indicates that children were indeed used in the original productions. The embodied identity of children is central to their role in drama, as the identities of ‘child actor’ and ‘child character’ are more closely aligned than the identities of adult actor/character. Once the presence of children onstage is estab…
Preconception Care in a Remote Aboriginal Community Context
Preconception care (PCC) is acknowledged as a vital preventive health measure aiming to promote health today and for subsequent generations. We aimed to describe the content and context of PCC delivery in a very remote Australian Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Service setting. A retrospective audit was undertaken to identify what PCC was delivered between 2011 and 2018 to 127 Aboriginal women who had at least one pregnancy during this per…
Children in Greek Tragedy
Astyanax is thrown off the walls of Troy, Medeia kills her children to take revenge on her husband, and Aias reflects sadly on his son’s inheritance, yet he kills himself and leaves Eurysakes vulnerable to his enemies. The pathos created by threats to children is a notable feature of Greek tragedy, but does not explain the range of situations where the playwrights chose to employ them. Although they are largely silent, passive figures, children e…
Pregnancy intentions in a group of remote-dwelling Australian Aboriginal women
Consultation strategies that promote rapport, allow space for uncertainty and are inclusive of important personal and cultural contexts are likely to improve shared understanding of pregnancy intention. Universal screening for reproductive coercion and broad counselling on contraceptive options (including discrete methods) may reduce unmet need for contraception. Community approaches supporting reproductive autonomy that is inclusive of men, and …
Explicit and implicit training of food response inhibition is associated with food devaluation and weight loss
Teetering on the edge of care
The number of children and young people who are being adopted is increasing, with moves to place more children for adoption as quickly as possible currently high on the UK Government's agenda. The House of Lords Select Committee on Legislation proposed, in March 2013, that adoptive parents should have a legal right to support, on the basis that support services are ‘critical in ensuring placement stability and in achieving the happy outcomes whic…
