  • Optimal assisted return policies are dynamically inconsistent

    Open Access•Nicola Daniele Coniglio, Rune Jansen Hagen•ARTICLE•Public Choice•2026•References: 24

The number of individuals worldwide seeking asylum is steadily increasing. A significant share of asylum applications is rejected, resulting in millions of failed asylum seekers each year. Assisted return policies, a cost-effective alternative to forced repatriation, play a crucial role in addressing this issue. This paper presents a theoretical model analysing governments' optimal choice with respect to the generosity of these schemes. We show t…

  • Can we define global collective action problems away

    Open Access•Rune Jansen Hagen•ARTICLE•Journal of International…•2025

The adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals has rejuvenated an old debate: Can foreign aid be used to finance global public goods (GPGs)? There are those who see aid exclusively as a source of development funding for poor countries. And there are others who are open to answering the question in the affirmative. I put forward five arguments why the latter position is reasonable. Firstly, the formal definition of official development assistan…

    Open Access•Rune Jansen Hagen, Hilde Selbervik•ARTICLE•Internasjonal politikk•2022

    Open Access•Rune Jansen Hagen•ARTICLE•Internasjonal politikk•2021•References: 4

  • National Responsibility and the Just Distribution of Debt Relief

    Open Access•Alexander W Cappelen, Rune Jansen Hagen et al.•ARTICLE•Ethics & International Affairs•2007•References: 1

The Highly Indebted Poor Countries (HIPC) initiative is the largest multilateral effort aimed at providing debt relief. In this essay, we address the question of whether this program is consistent with a view of justice commonly known as liberal egalitarianism. We argue that the HIPC initiative violates two basic liberal egalitarian principles. More generally, we show why the debate on debt relief must move beyond a discussion of whether or not c…
