Open Access•Hao Qi, Zhongjin Li et al.•ARTICLE•Review of Radical Political…•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 1

The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted economic and social activities worldwide, exposing and exacerbating inherent flaws in the capitalist system. The pandemic’s devastating impact highlights the need for the state and its institutional agencies to actively intervene in public health crises and mitigate the economic damage they cause. This article situates the effectiveness and contribution of state-owned enterprises (SOEs) in the context of the COVID …

  • Cross-Boundary Subsumption: Toward a Political Economy of Platform Labor

    Open Access•Hao Qi, Zhongjin Li•ARTICLE•Modern China•2024•References: 21

The existing body of research on the platform economy provides a variety of interpretations of platform labor. Nevertheless, current studies have either placed exchange rather than production at the core of their interpretations or overlooked the historical continuity of the type of labor to which platform labor belongs. Employing a historical-comparative approach, this article introduces the concept of “cross-boundary subsumption” to illuminate …

  • The Profitability Puzzle of Digital Labor Platforms

Open Access•Zhongjin Li, Hao Qi•ARTICLE•Review of Radical Political…•2023

By examining digital labor platforms that connect customers with gig workers, we attempt to solve the puzzle concerning why these labor platforms, such as ride-hailing companies and food delivery companies, continue to suffer weak profitability even though they promise a more efficient way to mobilize and utilize the platform’s labor force. Stylized facts on the profitability of the top ten global labor platforms and a descriptive analysis of the…

  • Beyond state and market: The role of labor regimes and class dynamics in the East Asian miracle

    Open Access•Zhongjin Li•ARTICLE•Revista de historia industrial•2023

While conventional wisdom focuses on the roles of the state and the market in achieving high growth in East Asian countries, this paper offers an account focused on class dynamics. First, the paper connects post-World War II class dynamics in Japan and South Korea to the distributional outcome, i.e., the gap between labor productivity growth and real wage growth. Statistical evidence and econometric tests suggest a positive relationship between a…

  • Control of the Platform Reserve Army: The Roles of the State and Capital in China's Platform Economy

    Open Access•Wei Zhang, Hao Qi et al.•ARTICLE•Science & Society•2023•References: 5

The rise of digital platforms has formed a platform reserve army. The platform reserve army is the stagnant reserve army of contemporary digital capitalism, which brings challenges to labor control. Using data collected from an original survey of over 600 ride-hailing drivers in two Chinese cities, the roles of the state and capital, as well as their interactions in shaping capital's control over the platform reserve army in China, are clarified.…

  • Is China Imperialist? Economy, State, and Insertion in the Global System

    Open Access•Zhongjin Li, David M Kotz•ARTICLE•Review of Radical Political…•2021

According to Marxist theory, imperialism is not a policy pursued by certain states, but rather a structural relation emerging from the dynamics of some modes of production. In the capitalist era the profit and accumulation drive underlies the establishment of imperialist relations. This paper applies historical materialism to analyze the political-economic system in China today to determine the forces that have shaped China’s insertion into the g…

  • Giovanni Arrighi in Beijing: Rethinking the Transformation of the Labor Supply in Rural China during the Reform Era

    Open Access•Hao Qi, Zhongjin Li•ARTICLE•Science & Society•2019•Cited by: 4•References: 4

A Marxian political economy perspective is essential to analysis of the transformation of rural labor forces into capitalist wage labor in China during the reform era. Orthodox theory depicts this transformation as a market-driven process in which the state played a passive role. Following Giovanni Arrighi's seminal 1970 article, we seek to show that the transformation of labor supply and the formation of an industrial reserve army is a historica…

  • Guojinmintui: A New Round of Debate in China on State Versus Private Ownership

    Open Access•Fusheng Xie, An Li et al.•ARTICLE•Science & Society•2012•Cited by: 1

In 2009, the widening discrepancy between the performance of the state economy and that of the private economy in China triggered a sharp debate on the evolving system, especially the ownership structure, among people in academia, business and the political arena. In the debate, the rightists launched a campaign against the state-owned sector with false claims and misleading rhetoric, while the Party and state officials defended the state economy…
