  • Digital simulations at sites of holocaust memory

    Open Access•Paul Morrow•ARTICLE•Holocaust Studies•2026

Digital simulations of Holocaust subjects are steadily being incorporated into sites of memory. Such simulations generally seek to complement existing memorial infrastructures, but their esthetic and algorithmic features pose serious questions. This paper addresses those questions by detailing the spurs to simulation at sites of memory, the uses to which simulations have been put, and the hazards to which they are subject. Spurs to simulation inc…

Paul Morrow, Katie Schreyer•ARTICLE•Jewish Film & New Media An…•2022

This article analyzes a recent and controversial form of social media engagement with the Shoah : user-generated digital videos that circulated on TikTok. Drawing on a combination of visual discourse analysis, surveys of content creators, and empirical mapping of digital practices of Holocaust and human rights museums, this article pursues three goals. • The Meaning of Mass Atrocities Beyond Our Moral Fate

    Open Access•Paul Morrow•ARTICLE•Analyse & Kritik•2020

Philosophical accounts of moral progress commonly acknowledge the problem of mass atrocities. But the implications of such events for our ability to perceive, and achieve, progress are rarely considered in detail. This paper aims to address this gap. The paper takes as its starting point Allen Buchanan’s evolutionary theory of moral progress in his 2020 book Our Moral Fate. Through critical analysis of Buchanan’s theory, the paper shows that mora…

  • Naturalizing the centennial

    Open Access•Paul Morrow•ARTICLE•Memory Studies•2020•References: 7

Recent studies of centennials focus on explaining the social and political contexts for such commemorations. This paper develops an alternative, naturalistic theory of these long-range anniversaries. The paper starts by describing the value of a naturalistic account of complex cultural formations, and by reviewing basic demographic and physiological facts underlying centennial observances. Next, the paper provides a novel taxonomy of three centra…

  • The Thesis of Norm Transformation in the Theory of Mass Atrocity

    Open Access•Paul Morrow•ARTICLE•Genocide Studies and Prevention•2015•Cited by: 1•References: 2

Theoretical accounts of genocide and mass atrocity commonly embrace the thesis of norm transformation. This thesis holds, first, that individual and institutional participation in such crimes is at least partially explained by transformations in basic norms that structure social and political life. It holds, second, that preventing future occurrences of such crimes requires changing norms that currently govern the actions of particular individual…

All accidental gunshot fatalities in North Carolina were reviewed for the years 1976-80. There were 210 cases, of which 94 were self-inflicted and 116 were inflicted by others. Young white males predominated as victims, 31 per cent under the age of 15. Sixty-five per cent of the accidents occurred in the home and 18 per cent occurred in rural, "hunting" locations. Forty-one per cent of the cases involved shotguns, 39 per cent involved handguns, a…
