  • Deconstructing persecution and betrayal in the discourse of Anders Behring Breivik

    Open Access•Patricia Cotti•ARTICLE•The International Journal of…•2015•References: 8

On 22 July 2011, a 32-year-old Norwegian launched two planned murderous rampages claiming the lives of 77 victims. Shortly before his attacks, Anders Behring Breivik uploaded to the internet a self-styled compendium written in English in which he explained the motivation for his attacks. By deconstructing this text and the documentation contained in the first [court-ordered] psychiatric evaluation of Breivik, we can undertake to analyse his sense…

  • ‘I am reading the history of religion’

    Open Access•Patricia Cotti•ARTICLE•History of Psychiatry•2014

Could Reinach’s Cultes, mythes et religions (1908) have served as a model for the theory of religion that Freud was later to put forward in Totem and Taboo (1913)? This hypothesis has been tested by examining Freud’s marginalia in his personal copy of Cultes, mythes et religions. In this way it is possible to reconstitute the line of thinking that led Freud to declare, in late summer 1911, that he had found an answer to the question of the origin…

  • Sexuality and psychoanalytic aggrandisement

    Open Access•Patricia Cotti•ARTICLE•History of Psychiatry•2011

In 1908, in his article ‘“Civilized” sexual morality and modern nervous illness’, Freud presented neuroses as the consequence of a restrictive state of cultural development and its ‘civilized morality’. He found the inspiration for this idea by expanding upon previous formulations in this area by his predecessors (notably Christian von Ehrenfels) that focused on a cultural process earlier introduced by Kant, while also integrating in his analysis…

  • Freud and the sexual drive before 1905

    Open Access•Patricia Cotti•ARTICLE•History of the Human Sciences•2008•References: 2

A close study of Freud's use of the terms Trieb, Impuls, etc., allows an insight into Freud's sources of Inspiration, through which I interrogate the importance he gradually granted the concept of drive before 1905. Freud first tentatively introduced the notion of 'sexual drive forces', then developed the hypothesis of a 'communication drive'. There was much hesitancy in his defining the notion of sexual drive. He eventually adopted a concept wid…

  • Hunger and love

    Open Access•Patricia Cotti•ARTICLE•The International Journal of…•2007•Cited by: 1•References: 1

The interpretation of dreams" was the first text in which Freud referred to the system of two drives (drive of self-preservation and the sexual drive). In order to understand how this question was at work in Freud's mind, one has to go back to 1898, when Freud began to write the third chapter of "The interpretation of dreams". One can then see, in contrast with Sulloway's assertions, how Freud was inspired by Schiller, whose shadow haunted his dr…

  • Recollecting Freud (review)

    Patricia Cotti•ARTICLE•American imago•2005

Isidor Sadger, Recollecting Freud. Edited and introduced by Alan Dundes. Translated by Johanna Micaela Jacobsen and Alan Dundes. Madison: University of Wisconsin Press, 2005. lvii + 138 pp. $26.95

  • ‘Original Narcissism’ Or the Shadow of a Philosophy of History

    Open Access•Patricia Cotti•ARTICLE•History of Psychiatry•2004

Upon reading again the third chapter of Totem and Taboo it becomes clear that it was the English eighteenth-century philosophers and their followers who inspired in Freud his conception of a universal history of man’s evolution. This paper analyses, in particular, the links between this Weltanschauung and notions such as narcissism, omnipotence of thoughts and the Freudian ‘history of the libido’s development’ ( Entwicklungsgeschichte der Libido …

  • Une controverse familiale sur l'interprétation du rêve entre Alexander et Sigmund Freud

    Patricia Cotti•ARTICLE•Champ psychosomatique•2003

    Patricia Cotti•ARTICLE•Topique•2002
