Pottery from the Bolshaya Pelenda Site (Excavations of 2011)
After rescue archaeological works in 2011 at the Bolshaya Pelenda site in Kezhma District of Krasnoyarsk Krai, the site was divided into three separate areas based on its geomorphological situation. The first and third areas were excavated in 2011 revealing stratified archaeological evidence from the entire Holocene period. The lithological cross-section had a depth of 3.5 m. Cultural layers of various historical periods from the Paleolithic to e…
A Method for Attributing Non-Refitting Fragments to a Single Artifact
A Method for Attributing Non-Refitting Fragments to a Single Artifact
In recent decades, several new methods for studying archaeological artifacts, mostly based on digital technologies, have been developed. One of the most promising trends is 3D modeling, allowing researchers to deal with an exact virtual copy of the artifact, which can be manipulated in every way. We propose a new method for determining whether non-applicable fragments belong to one artifact, based on 3D modeling and mathematical statistics. After…
An Elk Figurine from Tourist-2, Novosibirsk
The Use of 3D-Modeling for Reconstructing the Appearance and Function of Non-Utilitarian Items (the Case of Anthropomorphic Figurines from Tourist-2)
This article presents the results of study of an Early Bronze ivory figurine from Tourist-2, using 3D-scanning with various technical parameters. The aim of the study was to test the new non-invasive methods of structured light 3D-scanning, with an accurate assessment of morphometric characteristics. In addition, use-wear analysis was employed to evaluate the previously unknown features relating to function. As a result, the original appearance o…
An Elk Figurine from Tourist-2, Novosibirsk
Most figurines from the Bronze Age cemetery Tourist-2 in Novosibirsk are anthropomorphic, and follow one and the same iconographic style, termed “Krokhalevka”. Two fragments, however, refer to a zoomorphic image—that of an elk. As they cannot be refitted, a special analysis was carried out. Computer-aided measurements and statistical comparisons suggest that they belong to a single specimen. This is important for further study, the search for par…
Objects of Portable Art from a Bronze Age Cemetery at Tourist-2
This article introduces an unusual complex of anthropomorphic and zoomorphic artifacts from a Bronze Age cemetery at the Tourist-2 settlement, situated in the center of Novosibirsk. Given their context, motifs, and style, they were apparently ritual artifacts. Human-like, animal-like, and bird-like figures limn mythological ideas. They are so unusual that we may speak of a separate style. Despite being very different, all the figurines have commo…
Ceramics from the Bronze Age Burial Ground at the Tourist-2 Settlement in Novosibirsk
