An Unusual Burial at Pyatiletka-1 Mound 6, Northern Salair Ridge
This article presents the results of a multidisciplinary analysis of materials from an atypical burial beneath mound 6 at Pyatiletka-1 in the Novosibirsk Region. A complete description of the earth-and-timber structure above the burial chamber and of the chamber itself is provided. The deceased person’s position is described. Results of scientific analyses are outlined. Clay vessels were tempered with grog, and the clay was likely mined near Lake…
Possibilities and Limitations of Dendrochronological Dating
Possibilities and Limitations of Dendrochronological Dating
Calendar dating of archaeological wood presupposes the existence of long-term tree-ring chronologies. Until recently, the development of such chronologies for the Novosibirsk Region remained an unanswered challenge. Several methodological issues had to be addressed, including the assessment of spatial homogeneity in dendrochronological signals across the region, the enhancement of the composite climatic signal contained within tree growth pattern…
On the Issue of the Material Used for Making the Side Plates of Buryat Bows
This article presents the anatomical analysis of side shoulder plates in a Buryat composite bow which is kept in the collection of the National Museum of the Republic of Buryatia in Ulan-Ude (inventory No. MIB NV 1208/1). Based on the combination of its surviving structural elements and morphometric features, this severely damaged composite bow was attributed to the manufacturing tradition typical of the settlement area of the Selenga Buryats. Th…
Dendrochronological Research of Archaeological Charcoal
This article discusses specific aspects of dendrochronological research using charcoal – a material long considered unpromising for tree-ring analysis. Frequent discoveries of charcoal at various archaeological sites and its relatively good preservation in cultural layers have made it possible to enhance modern approaches to sample preparation and research methodologies for this material. This represents a significant step forward in dendrochrono…
Xylotomical Analysis of Arrow Shafts from the Anash-10 Site (Krasnoyarsk Krai)
In 2025, the Kurai Team of the IAET SB RAS undertook rescue excavations of a burial mound at the Anash-10 burial ground, attributed to the Podgornovo stage of the Tagar culture and located in the flood zone of the Krasnoyarsk Reservoir. A set of six socketed arrowheads made of copper alloy was of particular interest among the finds. This is a unique discovery since fragments of wooden shafts have been preserved, which happens extremely rarely in …
Dendrohistorical Research of Modern Period Sites in Central and Eastern Siberia
Potential of Archaeological Wood for Dendroecological Research
Development of Dendroarchaeological Research in Siberia
The Kushevat Site and the Paleogeographic Context of the Initial Peopling of Northern Urals
A New Approach to the Study of Archaeological Charcoal
A New Approach to the Study of Archaeological Charcoal
In recent years, dendrochronological analysis in archaeology has undergone a substantial transformation, offering an opportunity to use samples of wood that were previously considered uninformative. One striking example is the analysis of charcoal excavated from archaeological sites. We have studied 448 samples of charcoal collected from metallurgical (iron smelting) furnaces in the Kurai and Chuya basins of the Russian Altai Mountains. Earlier m…
The Kushevat Site and the Paleogeographic Context of the Initial Peopling of Northern Urals
On the basis of new materials excavated in 2019–2021 from the Upper Paleolithic site of Kushevat, this study addresses the problem of initial human occupation of the Subpolar Urals. Geological and geomorphological fi ndings are presented along with new chronological and paleogeographical data. Archaeological and faunal materials are described, and result s of the traceological analysis of reindeer antlers with cut and chop marks are presented. Th…
