Open Access•Petra Havelková, Marek Bukáček et al.•ARTICLE•African Archaeological Review•2025•References: 4

Sex estimation based on skeletal dimensions can be an important tool in the case of a missing pelvis, but is population specific. The aim is to present logistic regression models for sex estimation specifically for the Old Kingdom population (2700–2180 BCE) of ancient Egypt. The sample includes the skeletal remains of 162 adult individuals, 95 males and 67 females, from two burial sites (Abusir, Giza), whose sex could be estimated based on pelvic…

Many scientists contribute to the progress of our knowledge of the world, be it its past, present or fu…

  • Modelling the Dynamics of Ancient Egyptian State During the Old Kingdom Period

Miroslav Bárta, Veronika Dulíková et al.•ARTICLE•Zeitschrift für Ägyptische…•2022

The present study aims to outline new, more adjusted approaches of research addressing social complexity of past societies. In doing so, we use varied evidence to detect major ‘leap events’ in the history of ancient Egypt which were reflected by the state administration and its fluctuating complexity. The archaeological and inscriptional evidence shows that crucial changes in history had a non-linear, punctuated character. To reveal their true ch…

  • The Origin of Imported Jars from 6th Dynasty Abusir

Karin Sowada, M F Ownby et al.•ARTICLE•Bulletin of the American Schools…•2021

Thin-section petrography on imported Combed jars from the 6th Dynasty Abusir tomb complex of Qar and his family identified the central Levant, between Beirut and Tripoli, as the production zone of the vessels. Dating to the reign of 6th Dynasty king Pepy II (ca. 2278–2184 b.c.), the jars were made of the same mixed Cretaceous clay type used for imports of the early Old Kingdom. None of the Abusir material was an Egyptian imitation, contrary to pr…
